Just picked up a very nice Sinn Flieger Model 356 (no connection to Porsche) chrono with a sapphire crystal. I had heard of them only slightly (mostly on this thread) but got interested when a salesman at a local watches-only store said he wished he could get a hold of any Sinn since they were very well made German watches. I did some research and decided to keep an eye open for a deal. Bought the watch on Ebay (lightly used) for about $450 off the new price; the US retail (new) is around $1450. The only US distributor that I now of for Sinn is at: http://www.watchbuys.com/ and the watchbuys Sinn page has a link to the factory site. The only probem is they are pricier than ever now due to the Euro exchange rate! If anyone is interested I will post a pic.

Did you say revitalize?

I'm thinking Omega Seamaster. Opinions already noted, but more are welcome. Would one be foolish to buy on ebay for about $800?

I'll stick with my $130 Victorinox V-7...

It tells time as good as any other watch out there. Looks nice, too!

I would exercise caution. Omega fakes abound, espacially with quartz movements. Try timezone.com

Tell you what tho, if you want a tough diver for that type of money have a look at the new Sinn U1. I have had a look at one I must say, its pretty speccy in the flesh.

Thanks Stuart. I respect your opinion on these matters. I like the Sinns also, but I'm looking for a steel band watch. Seems they favor anything but, which is great, but I'm covered there.

The Omega in question is a slightly used watch from a guy in DC with 100% satisfaction rating at 120 transactions. His personal watch apparently. I am nervous about buying such things on Ebay however. Let's say it's legit-is $800 about right?

Bob, I honestly dont know about the price. But it should be easy enough to verify the $$ via the web. I do know with that Seamaster series- it comes in a couple of different sizes, with a couple of different bracelets and as either an auto or a quartz. So, even if you are satifisfied with its bonafides, just make sure you are getting what you think you are getting.

Cheers

Stuart

Ahhhh....you know you're a "guy" if you're into watches, stereos and cars,, LOL.

My cars? An old 911, and a race car.

My watches? Breitling, circa 1946, a Gallet Chrono from '42 (?) and a LaRochette chrono.

I love the old stuff.

The turntable is an Oracle, with Perreaux pre and Threshold amps, and big Snell speakers.

here's a watch pic.

Thats when watches were watches. beautiful stuff. I have a 1951 IWC, and some 50s Seamasters and Zeniths. There are wonderful things to be had in vintage watches at no where the $$ of new stuff. And its a great pleasure to have a watchmaker remove the back and marvel at what lies inside.

Thanks Stuart. I didn't realize they were made in Quartz varieties until now. I'll double check that. As far as the rest-it's just what I'm looking for.

Oracle turntable? Very nice. I had a friend that had one also with a Threshold amp, but with Magnaplaner speakers and some other pre. Beautiful sound.

Stuart-I stand corrected on the rubber strap thing. I must have been looking at the wrong place for Sinn watches. Here's one that caught my eye. The dial is actually copper colored-not orange. Btw-I just found out-the Omega on ebay is a quartz.

www.sinn.de

Thats a special version of the Sinn Fleiger- i think it has sapphire crystal instead of the plastic on the black faced version (which is a great value watch). Valjous 7750 chrono movement.

Many Sinns have steel or Ti bracelets. Both Ive owned did. But that rubber strap on the U1 is the best rubber/deployant bracelet is great, actually. makes the watch.

With the Omegas, I would suggest about six months research prior to purchase. Would hate to spend the money to find out that it is not as cool as you thought.
I found my Speedmaster last fall. It is a 1969 Speedmaster pre-moon with the original bracelet. I love it, just enough patina that you know that it is not a new one.
I am lookin for extra links for a 321 bracelet if anyone has a source.
Thanks,
Dave

Here's my baby. The sapphire crystal makes this watch look brand new after years of abuse.

If you find two, please let me know! Am flying out of Switzerland for CONUS today and hope I can walk by the duty free watch section and not have something start calling my name!

Joe, If you think about it, can you find out how much a Seamaster Pro goes for at the duty free? I'm curious.

I'd love to have a Rolex GMT Master, but it'll be a while before I can justify that kind of coin for a watch.

"Justify" is the key here for me. I, as always, need to walk the fine line between quality and pretentiousness. For me, a Rolex would be pretentious. Yes-I could go buy one right now. I can even afford it (the less expensive ones). But my perception is they belong on the wrist of a millionaire or someone who wants to look like one. I am neither. The Omega Seamaster Pro (and the Sinn, among others) seems to walk that fine line with me. When my pay hits 7 figures, I'll be wearing the Rolex because then it will fit my lifestyle and it won't make me self concious. Great watches. I envy those of you who can pull it off.
