Seattle to Columbus OH in my 997S. Am I nuts?

I'm moving to Columbus OH this summer. We are going to transition there from Seattle.

I've got a 4 day window from June 28th-July2nd that I could potentially drive my 911 across country. I would be alone. I would fly back to Seattle after July 4th.

Is this a dumb idea? On one hand I think it would be fun, but I have this suspicion that 24 hours in, the fun is going to wear off.

What say ye?

P.S.What exactly is my legal situation if I get popped with a .38 and 1/4oz. of MJ going 135mph in North Dakota? Purely hypothetical.

You'd be nuts not to do it. I made it from Fairfax, VA to Phoenix in the 993 in two days.

sounds fine to me outside of the hypothetical...

I drove from San Francisco to Fort Wayne, Indiana...in a '69 912. in 3 days.

I think it's a great idea and if you pass through Minneapolis, I'll be there and take you out for a great breakfast. As with any road trip, it will have its high and low points in terms of boredom but what a great car to drive. You will have stretches of open road where you can put your foot down.

I drove a Boxster S from Los Angeles to St. Louis in 23 hours and 28 minutes by myself.

If I have to do it again... I think I'll stop for more than fuel and red bulls.

Police officer: "How much money do you have on you?"

HardDrive: "In cash? 10 thousand, plus some plastic."

Police officer: "What an amazing coincidence."

Do it. As to your hypothetical question...

I'll drive the 997 back for you ...

If you don't do it you will regret it. Life isn't about the destination but the journey.

billybek 06-18-2013 04:35 AM

What route would you take?
Are there more fun roads to drive than grinding it out on I 90 without going to far out of your way?

I drove my SC home from Rhode Island to Calgary solo. It was a fun trip and I would do it again.

I did San Francisco to Boston in 54 hours in a 69 911E.

Going to OH in a 997 is like going to the mall, just a little longer trip.

Seahawk 06-18-2013 05:00 AM

Four full days would be a lope with plenty of time for roadside attractions and off interstate travel.
I just spent five minutes on goog maps and planned your trip on really great roads I've actually driven.
You are welcome;)

Oh Paul, you're just an enabler. :p

onewhippedpuppy 06-18-2013 05:23 AM

Crazy not to, your 997 isn't exactly hardcore. And your road trip planner/enabler above is the man to talk to.

Laneco 06-18-2013 05:41 AM

Do it. Road trips rock! I've driven the 911 all over the western United States. I drove the spyder on a 2500 mile trip complete with some camping. That's a pretty strippy car (no top, no heat, no radio, no a/c) compared to a 997.

Find the blue lines on the map and go wander. You'll have a blast.

Are 997s such crappy cars that they won't make a 2000 mile sprint?
I've done two laps of America and two cross country drives in 356s (no AC, no cruise control). I can't say I never had problems in the 20,000+ cross country miles, but I'd do it again tomorrow.
