If you have an online account with your cell service providered sometimes you can do it from there.

You can do it though your personal email if you like. For instance, if ATT is the cell provider, it's 10digitphone#@txt.att.net. You can also send pictures, videos, etc.. they have different extensions for different tasks. @mms.att.net is another.

It depends on your carrier. For example, with Sprint you can e-mail to sprint number@messaging.sprintpcs.com

Good point, with T-Mobile you can email to text with [phone number]@tmomail.net

At least I think that would work, never tried sending with it but when my wife texts to my email that is how the return address comes through.

Speaking of which... if you and the person you are communicating with have smartphones and email you can just email each other.

However I do understand the randomness of modern communication... all in the same day from the same person I will get text to my cell, text to my email (work and home), email to my email (work and home).

Pretty sure you are a Mac user?

Messages app in Mountain Lion.

Love it.

If you have Gmail, you can send messages that way as well., but they need to be a contact with a phone number.

If you are texting an iPhone, then I believe there is an iMessage app for the MAC to do this. Only works with Apple stuff (Macs, iPhones, iPod Touch, iPad)

iMessage or iChat from a Mac plus it's end to end encrypted.

Also check out google voice. It works great on any web device.
