David Cammack, Tucker collector, dies at age 84

Just heard this news (a couple months late)...

Any of you who ever made it to see the Tucker Collection private museum in Alexandria, VA will be sad to hear that David Cammack passed away in April.

David Cammack, Tucker Collector Extraordinaire, R.I.P. | The Truth About Cars

Fortunately for those of you who never had the chance to see his collection (truly amazing) it will be given to an auto museum (intact) in Hershey, PA.

If you have any interest in Preston Tucker, the car, or the history, it will be worth the trip to PA. When I lived in the DC area I spent several days at David's collection just rooting around thru all the blueprints and documents from the factory, not to mention the cars, parts, engines, etc that he has. A fascinating piece of automotive history. That car and Tucker's ideas were so far ahead of his time. I often wonder if there was any relationship between Preston's ideas and Porsche. No doubt the Big Three took many of his ideas in the 50's and 60's and put them into production.

Here's a great Youtube of his collection: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3196cUsLOE&list=PLShWzaJlhCE0m6zPKq-HFttObbnYtpyTr

RIP.

Another blast from the past. Two of my childhood friends were Tucker and Heidi Viemeister. Their father Read worked for Tucker as a designer in the early '50s (hence Tucker's first name). They are an incredibly creative family. They convinced me that creative thinking is a learned skill, and Read taught it well. Read was devastated that the Tucker did not succeed and I don't think ever got over it. He idolized Preston Tucker.

Thanks for the post Nick. Not sure how realistic the movie was, (with one of the Bridges boys), but it brought to light a fantastic story.

50 total cars, 51 if you count one that was nearly finished at the factory and later finished by owner. 52 if you count the Tin Goose prototype.

From what I have read the movie was generally accurate with some artistic license. Here's a reference about the movie:

I was looking around to see what happened to the ones that didn't survive. Looks like one (1027) crashed on the track at Indy during a test run.

Wow! I would have loved to have met Mr. Cammack, and seen his collection. I am fascinated by the Tucker automobile.

That the collection remains intact is a fitting tribute. My next trip to Pennsylvania is now going to include a side trip to Hershey (for something besides way way too much chocolate)...

He was a great man. Once they get the Hershey exhibit up and running it will be great. The article says David's brother paid to build a 3500 sq foot addition on the museum to house the collection. The Cammack's did very well in real estate decades ago.

Guessing it was 10 years ago where I went to a Tucker car club event outside of Chicago, the hometown of Tucker. It was the only time I had a chance to see some up close. Might have been Mr. Cammack who was showing all sorts of neat Tucker related goodies and NOS stuff. If it was him, he told me of having blueprints and even tools from the factory. Most interesting.

I often wondered if Preston Tucker copied the chassis concept from Tatra.
