Questions for those who'd know: is the vast amount of empty seating above the pits typical for various times during the race... such as meal time, etc.? Is that seating open to teams, press, and sponsors only and/or is access to that section very expensive?

Yes, you are correct. People tend to move around a lot being the race is 24 hours. There is much to see and do during the race. Lot's of vendors, food, rides, parties etc.

Plus the noise there on the front straight is just about unbearable for any length of time. As the sound reverberates between the two sets of concrete grandstands on either side of the track like in a canyon. I ended up not using my grandstand seat much at all, but wandered around for views of different parts of the track.
Have seen some good pics of the pit action taken from those seats tho.

The #2 Audi is in the lead right now.

But......1 lap down and nipping at his heels are both Toyota entries, #7 and #8!

And a lap behind the Toyota's is the #3 Audi.

The Toyota's are making it interesting!

WTH? Seriously? I am shocked by this with all the safety bulit into race cars today. Sad to lose such a young man. Poor family...

I guess I am just an old fart, but it just is not the same without TRG there. Those were the days.
