mountain men; ever cook a trout on a stick over fire?

i have a huge backpack trip coming up. we are hiking into the sierras. i was told 18 miles.

taking a frying pan and a bottle of cooking oil seems really "heavy" from my perspective right now. anyone every cook a trout in the wilderness without a pan? i would need..ok want it to taste pretty good. mountain house dehydrated food gets really old to me fast. last time, i almost vomited on the last bag of chili mac. i predict a 10 lb weight loss.!!

I have spent lot of time cooking over an open fire, especially when I was a rafting guide.

When weight is a factor, my Dad always carried a wire toast holder, similar to the pic below. Negligible weight and works for a lot of different foods. ![]() For fish I always liked to wrap it in aluminum foil to hold the juices. I'd still put it in the wire rack, however. I always take foil when camping!

In my college days I'd put a fillet, butter and lemon pepper in Aluminum foil and heat it up on the engine while driving.

If you had to catch that trout in order to eat it, you don't want half the fish to break off the stick and land in the fire, I'm just sayin'.

Otherwise, yes, I've cooked a fish on a stick. A "green trout" - largemouth bass . Crap compared to what can be done in a kitchen, but at the time it sure was tasty.

One of the best trout I have ever eaten was on a fishing trip and we wrapped it in aluminium foil with lemon and butter, then left it on the (not too hot) charcoles on the side of the camp fire. Maybe we were just really hungry, but it sure was good.

Back in the late 60's-early 70's, we'd carry "butter powder" on long hikes ( like the A/T). Don't know if they still make it or not.

Ditto on the foil plan. if you really want to get down with your inner hunter/gatherer, make a basket as illustrated above out of green wood and lash it with wire.

You don't - it will be very soft, but still butter. And unless you need cold fat to make something - like a pie crust - then having it air temp is no issue.

Unless of course your air temp is hot(ter).

Some good suggestions here. I never used foil. You can only normally use it once & then it's a wadded up piece of trash in your pack. Once I did sort of smoke about fifteen trout over a fire so I could take them out & eat them then. I made a fire and let it burn down pretty low. I made a grid of green pine sticks supported over the coals by rocks around the edge and put the fish on top & turned them over as they cooked. They don't get crunchy, but they get cooked with a smokey flavor. You can eat what you want at the time & cook the rest until they are a bit more dried for later. But what I always did was go to the store & buy a cheap, lightweight, 12' frying pan and cheap, lightweight lid. I'd take the handle off the pan & use it to fry (I only used something like canola oil and garlic salt & pepper for trout) and the pan can be used for a bunch of other things too.

Funny story. Wife and I plus two friends are back-country camping in the Smoky Mtns. 2-3 days in, 2-3 days out. We stopped for the night by a stream and ran into another person which was, by itself, rare. Turns out the guy was a fishing guide hanging out waiting for his next client. Well that night we were warming up Chef-Boyardee in a pot that we carried in plastic bags. He wanders by and mentioned it smelled so good and offered to trade us for some trout he had caught. We said SURE! He comes over with like 20 fully dressed and cleaned trout that we stuck on sticks and cooked over the fire with some Tia Rita spicy chile salt. Best trout ever. We felt like we got the better deal and mentioned it and he said "I've been eating trout 3 times per day for 3 days, this is like the best meal ever." Everything went better than expected.
