How many times have you called the police to report something?
Some of the news discussion regarding George Zimmerman has been about how many times in the past he called the police. Prosecution says he's a wannabe. Defense says he's a concerned citizen.
Made me think... I probably end up calling the police non-emergency number once or twice every few years. Don't think of my self as a wannabe or a vigilante. Just figure it's better safe than sorry to call in stuff when it crosses a certain line. Last year we saw some teenage boys climbing on top of the playground sunshade at the park next to my house - it's about 20 ft off the ground and was destroyed a year earlier. Couple of years ago my wife saw a guy checking car doors in a shopping center parking lot. After I saw him inside a car digging through the glove box I did call 911. He was arrested. Last time was just a couple of weeks ago when I followed signs to an indoor garage sale and the house was trashed. Graffiti like paint inside, holes in the walls, garage door rollers removed, comments from the guy holding the sale to the young boy who was with him about "getting back at her." At what point do you pick up the phone to call the police? |
I might average a call every other year. Last one was a few mos. ago when that lady was casing houses for future burglary. Before that was a car wreck I witness in my rearview mirror, but couldn't turn around on that divided road to go back and offer assistance. Then I had that pedestrian claim I hit her. Called 911 for her. A few years earlier I had a knife pulled on me. Cops couldn't have cared less except in the car accident cases.

Twice for me.
I was on my nightly walk and a kid in a car threw a rock at me (he missed). You may think that was trivial but I considered it dangerous and so did the cops. As it turns out they caught them later that night. They were hooning in their car and got pulled over. The car matched the description I gave and the kid confessed to throwing rocks after the cops talked to him in the station. Another time a Meat head and his girl friend came to my door late at night accusing me of calling the cops about the noise from a party across the road. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/575418-what-would-have-you-done.html |
Twice, once a burglary of a law firm across the street 30+ years ago , another on a B and E on my next door neighbors house about 20 years ago.

I make it a point not to be a rat.
However......if I ever saw something that was really over the top (especially an assault, etc.) I wouldn't hesitate to get involved to whatever extent I felt warranted. I have had to report thefts a few times. My stuff that was pilfered. |
Never...
And I live in the shadow of New Yawk City.... |
A few times a year when an azzhat goes thru my fence. A few times a year when witnessing a bad auto accident
|
A bunch. I had a neighbor that was selling drugs. I live on a culdesac and the owner (who's now in jail awaiting trial) rented it to some ****bags. The cops said to keep calling to establish a pattern. Cops showing up at their door finally convinced them to move.

Today?

Rarely, but I'm not shy about it. If something looks off, I call. We had some crazy SOB walking down our street trying to stop cars. He was clearly demented. 911 call. I was duly impress with the police response. 2 minutes and 2 cars came in hot.

Zero, Zip, Never

This isn't a fair question, as I would think most on this board live in a safer community than were Zimmerman was, it wasn't a Country Club gated community, but a gated because it isn't a good area, lots of drugs, crime, ect.
In an area like that, where there is lots of crime, there will be more calls to the Police.. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZSfOI3c_iSs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> While, very tame compared to many places in the Country, it aint no Country Club.. |
More than most of you above. I get P.Oed at road ragers and call them in. Best one I called got nailed for reckless in a work zone. He was packing heat as well. I wrote a complaint on that.

Only once in my life. Police response was much better than expected.
|
I called them once to report my car had JUST BEEN STOLEN, it was driving away, they asked me how much I owed on it, I said nothing, it's mine, it's going down PCH in Huntington Beach, they said they would get right on it. Two weeks later they found it in Pacoima, being driven around with no front seats, no radio, they were redded up and ran it into a freeway overpass. They got off because they said through an interpretur they found it in Pacoima and were just driving it around. I didn't take it back, I got high book for it.

At least nine times to report abuse. At times we first went there.

I called the police dispatch line just a few days ago to report an unsafe vehicle.
It was a honda civic, lowered and all sorts of crap......the problem was that every time he hit even a minor road imperfection, the fenders would rub the tires, producing a large amount of smoke. They caught up to him......after he'd had a flat and slammed it into a ditch. |
Three times in 50+ years.
|
Lots of times. I've witnessed two car accidents and called 911. There is an idiot who lives next to our office building and parks a van on the street right up next to a stop sign. When stopped at the sign you have to pull out into the street to see around his van to check for oncoming traffic. I got a ticket for not stopping because stopping at the line is a waste of time. You HAVE to pull into the street to see around this guy's van. Every time I look out my office window and see the axhole's van parked by the sign I call the cops and he gets a parking ticket. We'll be even in a few years.

only a couple of times
once when i was attempted mugged at almost gunpoint twice on the road calling in drunk driver once witnessing an accident |
Once to obtain a police report on 2 stolen audio systems, and once when a laser was pointed at my chest, both at my home.
|
Used to be a few times a year when we lived next door to a rooming house. Noise, assaults on the street, guys selling drugs.
We moved a couple months ago and I've not called them since that. Cheers d. |
Interesting question. I expect the answers will vary based upon where folks live.
For me, I think the number has been three times in thirty five years. The first was when I was an assistant manager for a fast food chain which will remain nameless (but has golden arches) and our drive through speaker erupted with profanity one Thursday afternoon. I went out to talk to the guys in the car and spotted the half-consumed 24 of beer in the back, went in and called the RCMP. Response was great and the guys got to take their take out with them to the station. A couple of other times happened after I had picked up hitch hikers. One of whom was boasting about selling drugs to jr. high school kids and the other tried to sell me some tapes I believed to be stolen. I don't pick up hikers any more. The night my drunken neighbour was driving around our hay fields with a loaded rifle trying to spot a deer which had crossed his lawn on the way to my place, I let my brother in law handle it. He used to wrestle and was a bouncer for a few years. :D Best Les |
Let's just say that I've called the Police a LOT less (never) than they've been called on me. Hey, we weren't criminals...we just had loud parties :)
|
When I had my antique shop it was at least a couple times a month. There were accidents in front of my shop at least once a week, and to have the shoplifters that I caught arrested. Since I sold the property, I have not needed to make a call. And never had trouble around the neighborhood.
|
6-7 times in my life. And I'll be 65 in 3 months.
|
People call the police about me once or twice every year, but that's about it ;)
|
Forgot...plus one.
When I lived in a Condo on the fourth floor the couple next to me would do a lot of drugs. My Kids were over on the weekend and we were all sleeping. I woke up around 2am to a heck of a lot of noise on the neighbors balcony. I looked out my window and they were both stark naked and he had her bent over the railing fornicating like they were the only ones left in the Universe. |
i called last year when i witnessed a couple of guys brawling right downtown, broad daylight. police response was over 40 minutes, not sure they ever came, as i left the gun store before they arrived and the guys were still outside taking potshot punches at each other. very odd, actually.
then a week ago i nearly got nailed in an intersection because the lights were GREEN in all directions. very scary. that's it. |
There were some white trash people living over my back fence selling drugs from their rented house. It was a bit obvious. Cars with engines still running, eyes looking left right left right while someone trotted into the house and back again in 5 minutes. It didn't really worry me as school kids need to buy drugs from somewhere. But they had a rip roaring party one Thursday night that was going strong until 10 the next morning. I thought one bad turn deserves another so I went to the police station and talked to my old boss and "anonymously" reported them as being possible drug dealers. I'm not sure what happened but the people moved on a couple of weeks ago. These people never stay for long in rented houses.
|
Hmmmm, almost never until the past few years.
I call about once a week now. There is this one lane bridge down the road on a busy state highway with lights controlling who goes first. The lights are going down almost weekly. I figure when the really bad head on happens at least the victims will know the locals knew and refused to respond. The wrecks appear to be happening quite often right now. |
I have only called the popo once when my car was broken into in Michigan. I ended up having to drive to the station to fill out a report because the officer on duty was on his dinner break...

This doesn't count calls to report a couple of fender-benders for which the police here refuse to come. |
Called 35 years ago to report someone had broken into my car. Called about 20 years ago when a neighbor was cutting down a tree on my property and threatened me. Called a few years ago when I found a body on the side of the road after a motorcycle accident. And lastly, called a few months ago when I saw some guys were messing with a 70-71 Mustang at about 12:30 AM on the way home from work.

No... I didn't call the popo on that one. |
