VINs, Engine and Tranny # question
Hey guys,
I have a question VIN, Eng, Tranny numbers. I am not guru in Authenticity questions... I came across file and it appear that numbers should be close to each other, but on this list it looks like is not. #2 has 12800070-1085011-1280010 (this looks to me like Engine swapped) #3 has 12800115-740995- (this looks to me like Engine swapped) .... #15 has 12800539-1280329-1280477 ( this looks to me as most Authentic) #20 has 12800590-1280458-1080166 (this looks to me like tranny was replaced, or this is Factory???) Are those came from Factory like that or Eng, Tranny were swapped and just shown current numbers and not Factory. Can someone please clarify this please :D Thank you, -Y. With the 356 there was no real relationship between the 3 numbers, other than they all 3 incremented each time - maybe not the same amount though. For example, Karl, Horst, and Hans could all head for an engine to install and instead of taking them in order they swap 'em around. Doesn't matter though - whatever is recorded on the Kardex is what that car is supposed to have. Of course, due to German privacy laws that info is very hard to get now even for original owners, but was easy to obtain until the late 90s. There is/was a gentleman in Switzerland that had copies of the 356 kardexes that was still supplying some information. But, a basic range should be possible to determine if you have enough chassis numbers and known-good data to go from.
So on 356talk, the originality geeks would want engine and trans numbered to match the kardex, or a replacement engine wtih said swap out noted on warranty portion of Kardex. Next up would be an engine and transmission in the correct range (+/- 50 or so on the numbers), then any engine of the correct type, and finally any 356 engine, a 912 engine, or god forbid a VW engine. You can see the "range" of acceptable numbers for 356s and 912s on 356a.com - here's the info on my car (Dad was original owner and I don't have a Kardex so I've never entered the info into the DB. I did locate the cars made on either side of mine but one was in a junkyard in Ohio in '91 and the other was for sale in Germany in 2000/2001 but the seller never replied to an email I sent). Chassis number 222522 is a 1965 356 coupe (C) by Karmann (built in 1965). This car was originally fitted with an engine as follows: Type: 616/15 (1600 C), with a serial number between 716805 and 717909. Type: 616/15 (1600 C), with a serial number between 733028 and 733197. Type: 616/16 (1600 SC), with a serial number between 813563 and 813893. Type: 616/16 (1600 SC), with a serial number between 821702 and 821855. |
