Battery/Battery Terminal Cracks?

We replaced the battery in my mother's car this afternoon. This looks VERY Strange. Look at the crack in the terminal itself and the battery case. Sorry for the big picture. I did crop it quite a bit, but I want to show the detail.

The round circumference of the lead post base is indented. I'd guess dropped.

It looks like some "genius" tried to cut off a stuck lead and just to help it along bashed it with a hammer.

That will leak nasty acid into the engine bay. Your mum needs a new battery.

No, the battery quit and I replaced it today. This is what I found when I replaced it. It sure looks like someone took a hammer to it. Or someone put a screwdriver through the case.

It was a low miles replacement for the cars original, under warranty. That was several years ago. It has been in the car for several years and quit this week. But that sure looks like damage caused by a hammer or screwdriver plus hammer. Weird!

You will want to wash that battery area out with baking soda solution followed by plenty of water.

Yep. Don't want a 914 hell hole!
