Old Aviation Sectional Charts (maps) wanted

I know this is a long shot but I have been doing some searching online to no avail. I am looking for some old aviation VFR sectional charts, specifically, for the New York area. Preferably, I am looking for the 30s but honestly, I would be interested in getting anything from the 60s and older.

I would prefer to purchase an old chart but honestly, I would be interested in a scan of it as well.

Anyone have any ideas?

This is the closest I have found so far. Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields: Northeastern New Jersey But it is only bits of the map and not the area I am looking for.

If you find a source let me know. I'd also like some old sectionals from the 60s or maybe 70s. Los Angeles and Phoenix.

What is a good source for old road maps?

I have seen some good old maps show up on ebay from time to time. If I find anything cool, I'll send it your way.

I did manage to get a map northern NJ from 1876 which is pretty cool.

I may have some from the 50-60's My uncle Jessie lived in Rochester? Canadiegua (sp)? and flew in the area. I have his old computer and sectionals, I will check when I get home from work. I have them buried in the attic so be patient.

Hey, I managed to get my hands on a Nov 1955 NY sectional. Check out all the airports in the area in the 50s! Notice LGA, Idlewild as JFK didn't exist. Also, look at the wacky runway positioning to Idlewild and Newark! Look at all the seaplane ports. Cool.

Still want to find older ones if possible, but thought you all would appreciate this. This is just a section of what I scanned. If you want it at a higher resolution, just PM me and I'll send it out to you.

I am not a pilot, but am a bit interested in history, esp on Long Island, which has a huge aviation history.

Venturing down the rabbit hole I came across this site, It has extensive history of airfields from the past.... pictures, and some partial scans of sectionals... the site also has history from many other parts of the country..

Hope this is useful..

TimT,

I don't know if you have been there but Roosevelt Field has some great history around it. There is still a great airplane museum there...all that remains of an airfield that remembers Erhart and Lindbergh. Drop you wife at the mall and take your time at the museum.

I thought some of you airgeeks would appreciate this like I do. For a few years, Teterboro Airport in NJ was called Bendix Airport from 1937 to 1943. Yes, like a geek I confirmed it with the teterboro museum. I found this in an antique store.

I got stuck on a layover in LaGaurdia last weekend..... What a shiit hole of a place. Not nearly enough seating at the gates, cramped hallways, crummy food vendors and a bunch of weird folk.

Best part about LGA, (pre 9/11 of course) was you used to be able to pull your boat right up to and tie up to the end of Runway 13 to watch planes land.

I flew in and out of LGA for 30+ years when working, hated it. Bang the plane down and slam the brakes + thrust reversers. Place should be pickled.

Funny you say that..... the landing at LaGaurdia was the hardest I have ever felt in an airliner. I couldnt help wondering if the oleo struts were damaged during the hit.

It took a while but I finally figured out what this was. Cool, I didn't know there was an airport in Brooklyn? Sure, closed but the runways are still there. Floyd Bennett Field. wonder if the runways are good enough for an emergency landing?

Been going there since I was a little kid. Love the place.

Two of the runways at Floyd Bennett could still be used if needed. Every once in a while they hold an airshow there. It is the home base of NYPD aviation now, and up until a few years ago was the home of Coast Guard aviation NY sector. That unit moved down to Atlantic City. ( which I feel leaves a big gap in coverage, next closest unit is Cape Cod..)

There were a few other airfields in Brooklyn besides Floyd Bennet... check the link i posted

Apparently as survival of the fittest, or evolution of the areas surrounding NYC regarding the growth after the WW's Obviously the smaller operations failed...

Regarding Flushing ... they built an air field in a swamp....

As Vin mentioned every few years they open a portion of the runways... clear them of fod and land some planes...

This is a bit closer to home

In this link you can see the remnants of Mitchell Field

There still is a PX at Mitchell Field... a few of the buildings are still Gov't/Armed services owned...

Nassau Community College now occupies the NNE and many of the other buildings around the "A" tack.....

You can see a large portion of the end of one of the runways just southing and east

I got my associates in engineering sciences there.... that little piece of runway has been surveyed to a questionable degree of accuracy twice a year since 1975!!

In addition to the Cradle of Aviation Museum at Mitchell Field. There is a neat little place tucked behind Republic on New Highway...

American Airpower Museum

I'm pretty much aware of the aviation history in this area... My dad and uncle both worked high school jobs at Grumman,or Fairchild...

Uncle later went to work with GE in Penn..(lunar Module) then Sikorski..

Dad became a very polite engineer... civil...

Vin, I work with a guy who lives at Floyd Bennet,

His wife works for the feds, at Gateway... and they have housing for some of the employees...

I think he said there are only 10 other houses there....

Could think of worse places to live
