I have heard about some people doing this. One place is supposed to be big rigs operating in cold country.

The interesting thing to me is looking into the use of LiFePo4 as a replacement for lead acid batteries. We're looking into LiFePo4 for solar applications. They have better life than SLA, weigh less. They are a lot less toxic than the wet Nickel Cadmium batteries my customer prefers. And the power density allows smaller enclosures, which are quite expensive.

I didn't watch the videos, but the disadvantage to capacitors is that their voltage drops off continuously- steeply at first and levelling off near depletion, exponential decay or whatever you want to call it. Batteries are much better about maintaining a relatively constant voltage for a good portion of their charge. Automotive electrical systems need very specific voltage- more crucial on new cars. So you need some more complex power electronics to manage the voltage output from the caps. They aren't a drop-in replacement.

Bad idea. Most batteries are rated to provide some amount of amp/hours over a 30 day period of sitting to keep clocks and computers requiring constant energy alive. This is going to die after a few days with the low amp hours on a cap. Forgot, brake lights and hazards need to run with the car off as well.

The person in the video would do better to shave 25 pounds of him or the car instead.

I've done this with most of my 2-strokes.

My 1960 Harley had a magneto (John Deer tractor) for ignition and a lick start and a big ass'd capacitor in place of the battery. It had a generator but it was really small. The only issue was no lights unless the engine was running.

You probably need a battery in a 911 except for the carb models. The MFI, CIS and Motronic need the juice. How about a combination?

I've read a few posts at the author's website. People are taking this very seriously.

Having had to replace computers (CDI boxes) in aging vehicles before which are often equal to the value of the car, I'm very shy about this area of experiments myself.
