Who knew Ducatis won't last 5 seconds at top speed?

I've blown another engine up. I am getting good at this! All in good fun, but kinda expensive.

Well now that certainly does suck.

pete3799 07-12-2013 04:38 PM

looks like a long walk too.

Baz 07-12-2013 04:38 PM

How did she blow, Richard?

Since I know next to nothing about motorcycles, this may be a stupid question; if you have an idea what the RPM's were at the time of failure, how about installing a rev limiter and set it for 500 RPM below that?

Bill Douglas 07-12-2013 04:46 PM

Any sort of failure at full speed is very dangerous - especially Montana? speeds.

AFC-911 07-12-2013 04:58 PM

Dang! That sucks donkey balls.

What's the top speed on those things?

Don Plumley 07-12-2013 05:03 PM

Ouch. Glad that dripping oil didn't cause a worse problem at top speed...

911SauCy 07-12-2013 05:18 PM

According to Duc engineers the engines dont have a redline because of the engine design.

Apparently they were drinking the day they decided that. LOL

I almost bought a hyper-retard...glad I didnt.

Warranty probably doesnt cover that huh...

flatbutt 07-12-2013 05:19 PM

that truly sucks. My Monster has a rev limiter. Did you reflash the ECU?

motion 07-12-2013 05:28 PM

I'm sure it has a rev-limiter, but I wasn't into it in 6th gear. That would be pretty tough to do. Can't really disclose speed :D

So I now have a large hole in the case behind the starter motor. Looks like a rod broke. No warning at all... no tightening, no red lights on the computer, nothing, just Bang! Was riding with a buddy so I only had a 2 hour sit-down in the middle of nowhere Wyoming while he got the truck and trailer.

Its out of warranty, so I'll be shopping for a new motor. Not worth the labor costs to rebuild this one.

rusnak 07-12-2013 05:40 PM

I would think that oil on the rear tires at speed would pucker every bodily orifice in like .002 seconds

Don Ro 07-12-2013 05:41 PM

Phuq me, dude.

Were you being a "knucklehead"?

motion 07-12-2013 05:43 PM

Yeah, I pulled that clutch in real quick and coasted for like 2 miles without hardly using the brakes trying to get stopped. OK Don, whassat mean?!

Don Ro 07-12-2013 05:43 PM

Hysteresis can strike anytime. Don't blame Ducati.

Don Ro 07-12-2013 05:45 PM

You told us that you act like a "kucklehead" on that rig. 'member? ;)

Don Ro 07-12-2013 05:46 PM

Oh, that word. Hysteresis = metal fatigue.

Flieger 07-12-2013 05:53 PM

Fatigue is more of a science than that. And hysteresis is not a synonym for metal fatigue if that is what you are saying. Plastic deformation is a sort of hysteresis.

Don Ro 07-12-2013 06:00 PM

I'm being liberal (did I just spell that word?) w/the def. Relax. ;)
.
BTW, Richard, I feel for your disappointment and inconvenience...I do.

MMARSH 07-12-2013 10:35 PM

That sucks...I would be pissed if that happened to my Paul Smart.
