Need adhesive that never dries:

I need some of that adhesive that is like putty but sticky(?), I've seen it in automotive apps like securing the thin plastic to a door shell under the inside panel. You can un-stick it and then re-stick it several times. I've seen it in black and grey color, but the appearance doesn't matter.

Does anyone know the product I'm talking about and where to get it? It needs to be fairly sticky. TIA as always.

How about silicon adhesive? Different from silicon caulking. Also available at hardware stores.

3M 90 spray adhesive?

Radioactive 07-15-2013 05:57 PM

Its weatherstrip adhesive....

Its made by 3m, comes in yellow or black.

The NASCAR guys put the lug nuts on the rims with it...

The offroad guys put it on everything, I don't know why they don't just use loctite, I think they like that if they have to take something apart it is easier.

Made me think about those mouse traps with glue...

speeder 07-15-2013 09:50 PM

Thanks! I'll look for the 3M stuff. It needs to stay soft forever and not dry.

Tim Hancock 07-16-2013 03:46 AM

The 3M window weld is not what you are looking for as it is permanent. It sets up a bit firmer than silicone. Once cured, it will not release from properly treated/primed parts... it requires cutting off with a razor blade or saw type tool. It is the type of stuff windshield installers use to bond replacement windshields to modern cars. It is great stuff for re-bonding 924/944 rear hatch frames to the glass provided one properly treats and primes the glass and the hatch frame. It is pretty pricey and will go bad in the tube once opened.

The 3M strip caulk is something I use for bedding/sealing stuff like 944 tail lights. I am not sure if it is what you are looking for because while it does stay soft, it is not all that "sticky" if you are relying on it alone to hold something in place.

speeder 07-16-2013 06:28 AM

Thanks. Think about the stuff that holds the clear plastic to the sheet metal under an interior door panel, that's the type of stuff I need. I've seen in other places on vehicles, just can't recall where at the moment.

Anything that cures, (like windshield caulk), is not what I'm looking for. I have all that stuff already.

Mrmerlin 07-16-2013 07:18 AM

get the 3M PN 08578 this is what your looking for, see post 9

Isn't that the stuff which stinks?

Great stuff though.

You might try roofing mastic tape, makes a sticky mess but never dries.

Stop by your local auto glass installer and ask for a roll of butyl rope. 3M is the major player but there are others. Local place here sold me a huge roll of 5/16 for less than $20. Don't worry about the diameter too much. You can stretch it to reduce diameter. -J
