Dr Bose Dead at 83
Whether you love his products or think that they are an over-priced scam, you have to admire the empire that he built.
Audio Industry Pioneer Amar Bose Dies At 83 Ian |
I wonder if he'll go high, or low?
Probably neither!:D In any case.. RIP... |
I have two of his radios (gifts) and they're pedestrian, at best.
And I never liked his Bose 901 system. RIP |
I think the company lost focus and drifted away from his initial intentions. Checking out his credentials, I couldn't imagine someone more knowledgeable in the field.
|
Love 'em! RIP.

I sure got a lot of use out of my 301's from high school, through college and beyond. I even repaired the woofer surround and was still using them 25 years later in my garage up until a few years ago when they were replaced with a pair of LSA1's.
I don't have quite the same fondness for the Bose system in my current car and truck :(. A college friend of mine's sister worked at Bose out of college. My friend didn't know what his sister would do with a degree in Japanese. Turns out she could get a job at Bose working with their Japanese car company customers! My friend rode around the Bose test track with his sister and couldn't understand why she didn't drive the crap out the car since they were on a track. RIP Mr. Bose. |
I have fond memories of his 901 Series. I'd like to buy another pair just for old times sake. My wife gave me a Bose wave radio for Christmas one year. It's nice, but not worth the money she paid.
RIP Mr. Bose. |
Rest in peace.
I wonder if he will have a special shaped coffin, something like this: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/27/business/yourmoney/27goods.html?_r=0 http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/...7goods.600.jpg Perhaps broken up into several enclosures? |
Bose revolutionized staging with the 901 - I was amazed when I walked into a Cambridge stereo shop way back when.
He then revolutionized mid-fi and low-fi products, not to mention headphones in noisy env.s |
Love our 321 system just resoldered a few spots that got broken over the years have had it for 3 houses about 13 years. still works and sounds great.
|
His products reflect his research into psychoacoustics. It wasn't so much WHAT you heard, it was WHAT YOU THINK you heard. The brain can fill in a lot of blank spaces with the right cues.

So are older 901s good? I'm looking for an attractive set of living room speakers.
|
In pure audio terms - no. They used an array of $5 drivers that - when set up correctly - gave the listener a 3D effect due to the reflected sound from the back-firing drivers. Or something like that. :D
But speakers have come a long way since the 70s. Ian |
