Leap Motion Controller

I preordered one: https://www.leapmotion.com

Looks revolutionary. Supposed to be shipping very soon. PopSci had a great article on the company in this month's issue. The implications for this type of tech are staggering.

If if works as advertised and at that price point... amazing possibilities..

I'm going to write an app to control my wife remotely.

One of our developers has the dev kit iirc. It won't live up to the hype but will be an incremental move forward on the gesture front. We've hacked the first gen Kinects to do all sorts of things. Being able to read fine motor is a great capability but is a work in progress.

Todd, from what I understand, the Leap Motion is far more sensitive than even the newest Kinect. Something to do with shadow-based recognition and the math behind the programming. Good for something like 0.0001" accuracy.

They are different beasts with different goals. We'll be doing more testing but not sure leap is living up to the hype yet.

This came out of our labs:

Thanks for posting this stuff...I get so head down in what I am doing it is interesting and refreshing to see what might be next.

I would love a mouse less world...the transition from keyboard to mouse has always been clumsy.

Could just be me.

No, I agree. A computer should be like playing an accordion. Each hand has a task and it stays on it's 'keyboard'. Whether that's possible for most of us, I don't know. But anyone who has seen a back hoe being operated can see what I mean.

The Kinect looks ridiculous. No stamp licking gyrations gonna happen in my seat.

What I want to know is will the computer know when I give it the finger in Leap Motion because it's acting up? Because I yell at it all the time. ;)

I ordered one just to see what it is-
wondering if I can use it with a lighting console at work, pointing to lights in the theater.
will let you know-

Not sure of the real world use, yet. I would rather do everything via voice than gestures.

Try shaping a mound of virtual 3D clay into a sculpture using your voice :)
