Any Marvin Gaye fans here?

I'm a super fan. This tape of his vocal track isolated on "Heard it through the Grapevine" shows what real talent is, as opposed to the half-assed American Idol schit that passes nowadays.

Man, I'm turning into a grumpy old fk and I don't even mind.

That is very impressive. A link at the bottom will also give you Queen (Freddie Mercury) & David Bowie singing Under Pressure.

Autotune & the various recording pitch controls help make super stars of many poor vocalists.

Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and definitely Jackie Wilson. These cats can sing. There're more. They don't seem to live long.

The "What's Goin' On?" album is just as vital today as it was 40 years ago. Marvin has always been my favorite male singer.

I was just telling my s/o that "What's Goin' On" is to my mind one of the most powerful songs ever...with a soul melody nonetheless.

You know we've got to find a way....

The whole album, from What's Goin' On to Mercy Mercy Me to Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler) all are just as revelant today as they were when the album came out. It is my all time favorite album.

Being a grumpy old man has nothing to do with it. Talent like that is out there still, just way off the radar and mostly out of the commercial eye. It's unfortunate that (for the most part) an artist can no longer evolve and be a commercial success. Can you imagine Bruno Mars creating a timeless, (still) relevant
Album like What’s Going On? Neither can I. Even if he could, I doubt his audience could even comprehend it.

The janitor that cleans my office grew up with Marvin; his mom would often watch Marvin after school until his parents came home from work. Every now and then when Carl comes in and we have Marvin on the stereo he’ll offer up a story or two about “back in the day”. Not sure how accurate the stories are, but they’re always entertaining. Sounded like a cool guy who unfortunately let the white powder get the better of him.

Both of my sons got the full music education growing up, and they totally get the music I grew up on.

As an example, the oldest was in a kid's trivia contest at a local mall when he was about 12. During the section on music, he was killing it.

At one point there was a tiebreaker question, and the emcee said he was gonna play the opening of a song and for the contestants to hit the button when they knew what it was.

The guy played the opening bars of "Locomotion." He hit that button within about 3 seconds and told the guy what it was.

His mom and dad were so proud.

And then the guy said he would give him some extra points if he could name the artist. He yelled out, "Little Eva" immediately.

I told you all that to tell you this.

The night he got married, he had "Sexual Healing" and "Let's Get it On" playing on an endless loop in the hotel room when he and his wife went in.
