That's the thing for me. Time for some good news and who knows maybe we can get things back on track.

I believe the royal family sustain themselves. There is all that security and whatnot, but no matter what type of government is in existence, there will be that expense.

Frankly, I have always thought that this country would do well by having a figurehead to respect as we motor along through presidents that no one likes. But, alas, the Brits seem to be losing their sense of humor (whatever there was of that) about the monarchy.

The last king like figure we had was JFK. And it worked. It's too bad he had to be president at the same time. Or maybe I should say the last king like dynasty we had was the Kennedys.

So, I wish the young man well. I hope he gets it as some of the monarchs in the world do. I hope he becomes an inspiration in his time. I hope Prince William can do something by the way of statehood when he takes the crown, but we'll have to see about that. Maybe his principle job will be to try and maintain the protocol.

Tough job in these times. Tougher job to raise the little one for his job.

Lucky sperm club? Maybe, but the little guy's choices are slim. Would you like that? I wouldn't have made the grade.

Negative.

They get their money from the Sovereign Grant. The Queen has personal wealth and also they get money from the Privy Purse.

Um, yeah no.

Yes, I was wrong. You are spot on according to Wki. I should have looked.

The Privy purse is a bit hard to understand. A bit like our president putting his assets in trust while I office I suppose. Surprising that the royals pay income taxes except for the monarch and first son.

A young couple with a new baby. What's more special than that?

Not really. These assets are several hundreds of years old that members of the Monarchy (I forget who, specifically) "accumulated". Assets that perhaps rightfully belonged to the citizens. But since the Monarchy had so much power......

I'm Canadian and unfortunately we had to learn a bunch of this crap in school.

Oh..and the Royals Paying any sort of income tax is a relatively new thing (early 1990s?). So you can imagine how easy it's been for them to accumulate further wealth without ever having to pay taxes on anything.

Think about this...there was a story when the current Queen was a young woman (late teens, early 20s, I forget). Where she needed to go into a shop to buy something unexpectedly. And she didn't know how to use money......because the need for her to actually buy something personally had never occurred before.

I don't think she's that old.

When the Queen was in her teens or early 20s, she didn't know how to use money because she had NEVER had the need to buy something on her own. It was always purchased for her by the hired help.

Not really hard to believe that Royalty wasn't out shopping on their own.

Ah... I mis-read - I thought you meant that she was a young woman in the nineteen-teens or early nineteen-twenties.

I think this whole monarchy business is silly. They have no real power. They feed off of the population in spite of the fact that they have their own money.

I am a woman and I am not ecstatic. Didn't even hear about it until a day later. Happy for them just as I would be happy for the couple down the street. I don't know what the big deal is. Wasn't one of those gals that stayed up watching hours of their wedding either.

Call me selfish but I have my own family and life to worry about...

Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.

Thank you Eleanor Roosevelt.

Yep. Average of 36,000 babies born every day.

We killed a lot of people to be free from the monarchy. I guess for some it's hard letting go.

Really? I don't think he's all that attractive, but hey, who am I to judge?
