Fantastic. Just shows how insignificant our little blue dot is in the vastness of the universe, let alone our own galaxy.

I was smiling. See me standing there right next to the Pope.SmileWavy

Already posted Bill but still a great pic.

That little dot does not seem to be the center of the universe.

That's incomprehensible!

mossguy 07-23-2013 04:49 AM

So who took the picture and how did he/she get there?

The Catholic church used to burn people at the stake for saying Earth was not the center of everything.

I am pretty sure we are just a speck in a little tiny solar system, in a average little galaxy among many billions of other galaxies.

One of our deep probe rockets I guess. Take a while it go 900 million miles ...I can't recall when any of them were launched or their names

Edit: I see the name 'Cassini' in the Saturn pic....must be the mission/rocket name.. ?

wdfifteen 07-23-2013 07:00 AM

The photo from Saturn is stunning. The rings always look like a time lapse photo to me. What is the wide white/light blue streak going across the image about 1/3 up from the bottom?

Drdogface 07-23-2013 07:08 AM

Sun ?

hmm....that just got me thinking.

how to determine if point X is the "center" of space Y, without knowing the shape or size or being able to measure the space Y

it's reasonable to state that we're at the center of the observable universe because WE're the ones doing the observing!
