Harley Davidson 88 vs 96 engines
I've been looking around at used Road Kings. EFI bikes only. Is it worth an extra $2k to get a bike with the 96"? I actually like the 88" bike more.

You answered your own question, there. If you like the 88 better then buy it and upgrade later on after you've put 65k miles behind you. Loved my RK but seriously wanted to get a Road Glide as I like the fixed fairing better. Still haven't pulled the trigger. Good luck!

Both slow and heavy. Both bullet proof. Just know that the cost of upgrading is significant and the end result will be......slow and heavy. Buy the one you like better. If you want to go faster, get a faster bike for those days.

I have an 03 FLHRI, it has a stock engine (88). It has 45K on the odometer since I bought it new, I don't plan on increasing the displacement. Slow? It cruises and tours all day at freeway speeds. I like it and plan on keeping it for looooong time.

Slow? Comparatively, very much so. 68hp and 700lbs will cruise all day at freeway speeds, yes. But for carving mountain roads or the sheer rush of acceleration, probably not the tool of choice as compared to say, my 07 BMW K12S at 167hp and 450 lbs. Different tools for different jobs.
A matter of buying the right bike for your needs. Otherwise you can spend thousands to make a bike do things it will never do well. Exactly why one MUST own several bikes! Wives always understand. Last edited by Chocaholic; 07-25-2013 at 08:36 AM.. |

I bought my Electra Glide in '06 right after the '07's with the 96 were released. Got a smoking deal on it since it was the 88 and 5 speed. I have no complaints what so ever with the power and I ride it at 5,000+ feet. It is quick enough compared to most cars for me and the brakes are excellent. Is it faster than other sport bikes? Do I care? Nope, I can feel my balls after 300 miles of riding.
I rode an R1150GS prior and that was a great bike too, but I went with a dedicated dirt/trail bike and street bike. The Harley fit the need (long distance rides and daily commutes of 55 miles each way on the interstate) just fine. If you like the 88 better, get it. I have a Power Commander ad exhaust on mine and it bumps the power up a little, but not that much. It didn't cost a lot and was super easy to install. Bill |
