RIP Art Donovan
 

One of the greats both on and off the field. I always loved his interviews on Carson and Letterman, old Art tells a funny story. He did some Miller Lite commercials back in the day too. I miss the old athletes, not like some of the thugs we have today.

I would have liked to hang out in a bar with Art just to hear the stories.

What a great guy. I remember going to an event he attended at church as a kid. He had a crowd around him where everyone was laughing and carrying on. I think he shook 100 hands and rubbed at least as many kid's heads that day.

I was too little to know who he was but I'll never forget what a friendly, regular guy he was.

I did get to hang out with him at a bar. Went to a wedding at Donovan's Country Club. Someone mentioned he was in there, so I took my 16 year old son to meet him. The way he was on tv for Carson and Letterman was the same he was in person. 100%. No BS, just one helluva nice guy who loved to tell stories. All you had to do was ask him his opinion on modern day players and you'd be there for an hour. Real shame that he is gone.....Baltimore will always love him.

He's only of those guys who played the game for meal money, just because he loved playing. Modern players should be ashamed.

Lots of folks calling into local sports talk this week telling old stories. Sad that he's gone but he sure made and keeps making a lot of people smile.

As a kid, I sold the newspaper Grit door to door...one issue had several colored photos of the Colts and a story about their new QB from a sand lot team (Unitas). I was so taken in by their uniforms and insignia that I made them MY team. I even painted a horseshoe on both sides of my plastic helmet. I memorized all the off. & def. team member's names and numbers. I was besotted. My brother thought I was nuts.
Art Donovan, #62, was a character, for sure. A good guy you'd want as a neighbor.

A naturally funny guy, he survived in pretty good shape. Unlike some other veterans, like Jim Otto.

It's shamefull how the NFL ignored the old vets.

Yeah, Otto ended up a mess...Unitas could barely walk in his later years.
Art Shell (Raiders) has done a lot for the old boys...he's a real trooper, that guy.
