Got a job with GM.... Which GM car would you drive?
I just graduated and have gotten a job with General Motors in Michigan as a designer. I am very excited about the new job (even though it's not working for Porsche) and want to support General Motors to show my appreciation for their trust in me. I would like to get a car made by GM but am having a real hard time finding something that I really want. I have always been a huge fan of Porsches, Volkswagens, and foreign cars in general, but never much of a fan of American cars. When I look at the cars that GM has to offer I can't stop thinking about all of the other cars I could buy with the same amount of money. The money for a Camaro SS could go a long way toward a nice older 911.... Does anybody have any input as to what you would do? Should I really worry as much as I am about having a car made by GM?

If you need to drive something from Government Motors, maybe a CTS-V or 'Vette.

Buy what YOU want; not what your employer sells.

Get a classic GM!!!! A GOAT, an interesting Malibu, a Firebird/Camero. Something from the '60s or early '70s when they had some style.
Then start designing in style!!!!! ;-) YMMV or some such thing

IMHO easy choice.
Agree with the others about the classic GM. First gen Chevelle or GTO, or maybe even a Chevy II.

Haha, thanks. Yeah, it was pretty close. Porsche didn't want me so this was a good backup.

I would think you would want to drive something manufactured by GM. But don't compare an older 911 to a new Camaro. Any new car is going to be a different beast than any older car, even a few years old.
If you're just starting out, you need to look at your car as an important part of your financial planning and investments. Think about it. Your car will be the second largest purchase you are likely to make in your life and is the largest purchase you've made so far. Money you spend on a car is money you can't use to buy a house, invest, put toward retirement, spend for vacations, etc. If you buy a car that is expensive to operate or needs a lot of ongoing repairs, you're putting yourself behind the eightball from the beginning. Your first car should be something that is cheap and reliable. Save up the money you save buy having a cheap reliable car and buy a fun second car when you can afford it easily, and preferably pay cash for it. I paid for my 911 with the money I saved by driving a Toyota Camry. I have no regrets. My advice would be to get something made by GM, something that can give you a little sense of fun and is capable of playing with, but somethign cheap and reliable. Get the Corvette with the next car.

Why not an Opel Insignia/Buick Regal?

Agreed - don't buy a new GM product. Let somebody else take the depreciation. If you can't get the old Chevelle and need a GM vehicle, I'd go source a used pickup or a ~2004 Impala.
