Disabling iPhone Signal Search

A surgeon gave her iPhone to my lady friend because it got wet and won't work as a phone. According to the surgeon. At any rate, it's packed with music my lady friend likes and she wants to use it as an iPod, but it keep searching for a signal it never finds. This drains the battery. I wonder if there is a way to teach this iPhone to stop searching for a signal.

On my old iPhones...
I pull the sim card and go to settings>general>cellular to turn off cellular data.
I think that's all I do to retain all the normal iPod functionality.
