Ray Donovan - Soprano's reborn?

So I've recently started watching the new Showtime series Ray Donovan and can't help but think - interesting, but a complete Soprano's ripoff. To say the shows are similar is an understatement. It's taut, edgy, and with an all-star cast, but unbelievable that it's almost a direct copy of the Soprano's. Former Southie tough guy (Liev Schreiber) is a "fixer" for the stars on the west coast with a wife who seeks legitimacy and social standing (Looks strikingly like a young Edie Falco, complete with a Jersey'ish/South Boston accent), with an intelligent and reserved teenage daughter and an offbeat and not so-smart teenage son. They live in a beautiful multi-million dollar mansion near the stars, and Ray is haunted by deep familiar issues brought on by his father. In the Soprano's it's Tony's mother.

Great show, but even the first few episodes are almost direct copies of Soprano's episodes, right down to the famous Tony dream sequences. Does anyone else think this?

The three shows I record on Sunday night are, Ray Donovan, Dexter and True Blood. True Blood has morphed in to a train wreck. Dexter is still okay, last season. Ray Donovan is the must watch of the three.

Ray Donovan is by far my favorite show on TV right now. It's riveting. I don't see the parallels to The Sopranos, but I didn't watch a ton of them. Great cast. Dislike the wife character (not the actress); recognize her from Deadwood.

Agree, it is a great show. I also don't really see the parallels with the Sopranos and I watched all of them. Well cast and Jon Voigt? - definitely would not want to mess with his character.

I have been watching as well. And noticed the similarly to the Sopranos as well.

I get a kick out of Jon Voigt's character... he plays it well, I bet he gets nominated for an Emmy.

I thought of the Sopranos the second I heard the wife speak-- but that's where the similarity ended for me. You bring up good parallels though. Great show, great cast. The saddest scene in the show so far was when the son threw up on the watches.

The pool table scene was nifty.
