Really sad to see the last Speed News and Wind Tunnel
I know this has been discussed and we new it was coming. So are death and taxes. We don't choose to think about it until it happens.
As Dave Despain so aptly said, "We joined the Hall of Fame for TV shows no longer." Indeed. |

I still remember when Dave Despain did Motoworld back in the day.
I always enjoyed eyecandy at the end of Windtunnel. Good music and good editing of that weeks happenings in motorsports. I has a sad...

I'm on the fence. The studio could not hold Dave's ego.I haven't watched for over a year ever since they kept changing the times. His guests were good, and I liked it better with a guest host. And since when do we have to have British, Scottisht announcers on every race broadcast of every race except nascar?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hobbs_(racing_driver) I enjoy listening to Radio LeMans and John Hindhaugh (ESPN ALMS races) is a wealth of knowledge about the ALMS and Le Mans racing and history. ALMS races would have been better if Speed and now ESPN would have fired the whole announcing crew and put the Radio LeMans team in their place. These guys know this sport and are dedicated to it. Listen to a broadcast online and judge if it is better or worse than the truncated coverage you see on TV.

OK, race broadcasts are one thing, the weekly news is another. I've been watching Sunday race news since Bob Jenkins and Larry Nuber shared the desk and mic. There was Pat Patrick and Bob Varsha.
I couldn't hardly stand Adam Alexander. On the subject of journalism, yes, Despain seemed to have an ego. You think Varsha doesn't? Yet, their journalistic styles were different, both opinionated, but different. David Hobbs is genius but many miss it. It goes downhill from there as you bring up the names. But, the players notwithstanding, it was the show in all of its iterations that is now gone with no replacement in sight. I'll bet Autoweek subscriptions go up this week and for the next few weeks. And there's always the venerable National Speed Sport News But, I like TV. |

I really enjoyed Wind Tunnel even when they stopped taking calls. The 30 min. webcast after the show was like the first few seasons. I hope it gets re-incarnated on another network.
I do remember on Speed Report was hosted by Nicole Manske now Briscoe.

Would watch Speed News most weekends and always ended up telling my wife..."all they talk about is NASCAR!". They would give about 5 minutes of the show for other Motorsports. Wind Tunnel was great when it was a 30 minute show every week night and they took calls but later shows had a heavy NASCAR focus.
FOX killed SpeedVision, only hope this creates an opportunity for new automotive/motorsport channel(s) to sprout. |

The downward spiral started when Fox bought Speedvision and renamed it. I love sports, but fail to see how another 24/7 cable sports network is needed.
