Can anyone read this script?

I know Pelicans are a diverse group here. Many speak and read multiple languages. So I'm asking if anyone can read this script.

It's my better half's ring. All we know is it's turn of the century and hand made. It's a cigar band ring.

Can anyone read this or make sense of it?

Loosely translated...

Do not remove under penalty if law.

Hydrocket 08-13-2013 03:01 PM

LOL....I can't tell if you're being serious or not.

What language is the script?

jyl 08-13-2013 03:01 PM

"One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them."

You better run.

Hydrocket 08-13-2013 03:06 PM

^^I was worried about this....people giving me their interpretation of what the ring says.

I was hoping to get the right answer. We've wondered for years what it says. Nobody seems to know.

Thought it might be worth a try here.

slodave 08-13-2013 03:09 PM

It's Pelican, what did you expect? :D

HHI944 08-13-2013 03:13 PM

It looks middle eastern, but not Hebrew......there, I narrowed it down to a few dozen languages with a few dozen dialects each.

The inner band looks to have a good deal more patina than the rest. What's the composition?

Hahahah!!!

Not quite a lifetime, no. But I've put it up in a few forums. Still no luck!!

sc_rufctr 08-13-2013 03:48 PM

It looks like Buddhist script to me.

Is Vash a Buddhist?

Hydrocket 08-13-2013 04:02 PM

^^^Someone said it could possibly be Sanskrit.

Sanskrit was used in Buddhist writings IIRC....

stomachmonkey 08-13-2013 06:25 PM

The writing says, Warning! Do not wear for more than 4 hours.

Something tells me it's not for your finger.

Man...if it's not for your finger, I feel sorry for the guy wearing it. It's a very small ring.

Farsi and Arabic are not among them.
Sanskrit is, as is Bengali, Gurmukhi, Devanagari and Assamese.
Use google images to look at samples of each and see if you can spot similarities.

Think about what was in vogue at the time it was made. Perhaps something from the Indian continent since Brittania still ruled and going on Safari was still the aristocratic thing to do.

Was this handed down in the family? If so, maybe think about what the original owner was doing with her life at the time, and where she may have picked it up.

Oh, and if it is any of those languages I listed, then it is upside down in your picture.

Just texted this thread to Indiana Jones.

It's Ethiopian, no joke. See Edgar Allan Poe's "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket."

Even if we haven't found an answer yet (ever?), this has been fun.

Cheers, gents. :)

Likely. But also look at Devanagari.
Quote:

Since the 19th century, it has been the most commonly used script for Sanskrit. Devanagari is used to write Standard Hindi, Marathi, Nepali along with Awadhi, Bodo, Bhojpuri, Gujari, Pahari, (Garhwali and Kumaoni), Konkani, Magahi, Maithili, Marwari, Bhili, Newar, Santhali, Tharu, and sometimes Sindhi, Dogri, Sherpa, Kashmiri and Punjabi. It was formerly used to write Gujarati. Because it is the standardised script for the Hindi language, Devanagari is one of the most used and adopted writing systems in the world.

Ethiopian? Doubt it.
Ethiopian has no matra line, afaik.
