UPS flight down outside of Birmingham

A300 crash just outside airport. Seems like the news doesn't pay much attention to cargo crashes. They would be all over this if it had passengers on board.

Uh....for pretty good reason, no?

Miguel Antonett 08-14-2013 05:27 AM

It was on the news as soon as it happened - 5:05 a.m. or so, and continue with the "live" reporting as we speak... Heavy fog here that just started to lift.

The media will report heavily on this, but mostly because they had a good run with the SF Asiana crash. I have heard little other than related buzzwords - 'short of runway' etc. Trying to make some sort of relation between the crashes for the viewing/listening public.

Losing your package doesn't make for a dramatic story line.

I don't know, Matt. If I lost my package, I'd be pretty upset.

I just saw a video of a witness stating there was an explosion in the air before the plane impacted the ground.

This gives new meaning to "losing one's package":

As soon at the news said it was a cargo plane from Louisville I knew it was UPS.

Normy must've finally blown his top.

Too soon?

I'm afraid that isn't deserving of the BREAKING NEWS line that scrolls across the bottom of the screen.

Seems to be the almost universal eye-witness comment in any aircarft incident.

Explosion?
Break up in flight?
Ground impact +mushroom cloud?

HardDrive 08-14-2013 04:33 PM

People on the ground reported engines were popping/struggling. Bird strike? Ran out of fuel?

If it were out of fuel, it wouldn't have burned like that.

Tishabet 08-14-2013 08:19 PM

After viewing pics of the crash, I was surprised that both pilots were killed... Cockpit seemed pretty much intact.
