OT posters, since your not wrenching much anymore, how often do you go the 911 BBS?

After posting in the thread about not working on your car as much, I thought that I should change my oil since I forgot to ask my shop to do it when I last had it in. I have been only putting a thousand or so miles on it a year and didn't see the need to do this every year. So I post a quick question on the 911 BBS about what other use and suggest and you would of thought I asked the dumbest question in the world.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/765647-oil-change-choices.html

Like, even though I have been on this board for 13+ years and have close to 7000 post, how stupid could I be to inquire. And I get the search feature and the lengthy posts with every opinion that gives you everything but a simple answer. Perhaps its the age gap anymore. I see this in my children in that them saying "I don't know" or "could you tell me" as a badge of shame. I was expecting a few posts with some suggestions of brands and viscosity. Silly, I know.

I should of just posted this in the OT to begin with.

The "best oil" controversy goes back to my days with the 356 Registry and beyond - probably back to 1948. I can understand some eyes rolling at hearing the question again, but it's no excuse for being rude.
The best answer I've ever heard came from some Cherman fellow who was over here for a Registry Holiday. He said, " Why not look in the owners manual? If you trust the engineers at Porsche to design and build your car, why would you not trust them to know what oil to put in it?"

id10t 08-14-2013 01:50 PM

Never been in the 911 forum... well. maybe once asking about my mom's transmission... but I don't have a 911.

On the other hand, I check the 356 forum once a day and post when I can to help out.

scottmandue 08-14-2013 02:02 PM

I started on the 944 form (nice bunch of folks by the way) then got sucked into the OT vortex... then OT devored my soul and I am stuck here forever more...
I know some of the guys here like Miata.net and I have got some help over there, however there is an dispaportionet amount of arogance and ignorace flying around over at that BBS.

stomachmonkey 08-14-2013 02:04 PM

Have not been up there for years for exactly that reason.

I'd rather post the question here.

I recall one of my first posts about a coffee cup holder. Holy bat poo.

You'd think I'd asked for a nude pic of the virgin Mary.

speeder 08-14-2013 02:06 PM

It's been years. Probably since I sold my last air-cooled 911 in about 2004. I learned, and taught quite a bit there for several years, though.

PM me, I can hook you up ;)

Speaking of oil... if olive oil is made from olives and corn oil is made from corn what is baby oil made of?

I also think many of them are younger that's why you get that.

I understand... that is most likely why any thread asking about car audio almost immediately slides into advice on installing a gigantic sub woofer(s).

The big debate over there is about shocks... and most will tell you if you are not willing to drop at least $2K on shock don't even bother.

That's true, but there have been some many new grading codes and changes since 1989, I'm sure there are some improvements. And no, I am not looking for the ultimate oil at all. I was a Walmart looking at their 5 quart Mobil one and they have "Foreign Car oil" recommended for Porsche, Audi, etc. now. The car is only driven in the summer and fall. Usually short trips. In the winter it is kept in a heated garage and sits for 4-5 months. Since rebuilding the engine, I have had no smoke or oil leaks running synthetic. Whatya think?

I pretty much stick with Mobil 1 for syhtetic in my modern cars... when I had the old 944 I ran Castrol 20-50.

YMMV

I didn't think the your oil thread was so bad. You wanna see bad, ask them about a cool collar.

The thing is big forums get stale. I'm on some small forums and the attitude is there but it's different. You never see "AW, NOT THIS SIHT AGAIN" said by anyone. Sometimes they get terse, but have you ever been to a town meeting?

PPOT is somewhat unique. The intelligence level is pretty high on the average. And the subjects are really diverse. Lot of humor, some inside and some general. It this place was like other big forums I would have permanently left like I left Porsche ownership (well, you know you guys don't think a Boxster is a Porsche) and the 911 Tech forum.

Speaking of Boxsters, I have to get over to a thread I have going there. :)

85eurocarrera 08-14-2013 02:53 PM

Not often...but a engine drop is in my near future so I will be over there soon.

vash 08-14-2013 04:56 PM

i love popping in over there. new names, unknown.

still the same good information to the same old questions..and CIS still sucks, apparently. :)

VINMAN 08-14-2013 06:30 PM

Don't post in the 944 tech section much anymore. Never did much even in the beginning. Not really a big need to. Always figured out the few problems I've had on my own. Most of the tech sections of any of the vehicle related forums I post on, just have too many know-it-all's for my taste. ( no offense to anyone on here..)

daepp 08-14-2013 07:22 PM

I would think a new question would be very rellavent considering all the changes in fuel, lead and improvements in oils.

WHEW!! Boy am I glad I was one of the replies with an oil brand!! :D

A930Rocket 08-14-2013 09:30 PM

After selling my 930 two years ago, I stopped posting. Just made a clean break.

Hopefully I was patient with newbies and such with oft repeated questions.

One we had was, "my car won't start". Got it turned into a sticky with lots if good info to start with.

Rick Lee 08-14-2013 09:46 PM

I have a 993 question about once a year, but there's a different forum for the 964/993 bunch.

aigel 08-14-2013 09:54 PM

I am a regular on the 993 forum. My interest in the 911 section waned after getting rid of the SC. Why the hell do I want to explain to a noob how to adjust valves, if I don't even own a car with adjustable valve gaps? :D

I don't like Rennlist, which is busier in the 993 section. I also need to stay away from too much tech, as my car is where it needs to remain (NO MORE MODS!). If I do anything on my 993, it will be selling it and buying a 993 biturbo

I hardly recognize any of the posters in the 911 tech section any more. Anyway my enthusiasm for wrenching kind of staled after my third valve adjustment. Nowadays I keep to the yearly oil change and leave the rest to my mechanic.

craigster59 08-14-2013 10:51 PM

Since I've put a "Cool Collar" on my filter, I don't think my oil temps get high enough to warrant any oil changes. No muss, no fuss. I'm all about efficiency.

I started out at tech like most people. Since I don't own a Miata anymore, I quit going to their tech section. The Watercooler guys are pretty cool like the bunch here. there are a few wippersnappers there as well.

Bill Douglas 08-15-2013 12:25 AM

I kind of like how us here on the Off Topic forum know a tiny bit about everything. Guns for instance I find the gun guys a bit tiring, sort of like "Oh no, you bought the two screw version, not the three screw version, you should have talked to me first." More like I'd say F off. I also like the way we have an earnest discussion about the same topic every three months. More like bring your porsche your coffee, your chainsaw and we'll talk about dogs together.

Rot 911 08-15-2013 07:24 AM

I still post every now and then on the tech section. It gets frustrating when you see a thread that has so many posts with really bad advice. There is one there now where the guy is using a quart of oil every 300 miles and most of the posters tell him not to worry about it.

intakexhaust 08-15-2013 08:13 AM

Talking valve adjustments and an oil change in a 911.. LOL....
Just coffee clutching in the shop yesterday-

I still pop over there and post some but not a ton.

I enjoy it a LOT more now that Wwest is banned. He was a pain.
