Looks Like Porsche is Getting Beat Again

Chevrolet Corvette, finally a legit Porsche killer from Detroit - Finally getting some respect (1) - CNNMoney

Kudos to the gold chain crowd.

Meh, the vette has been winning the horsepower war for many years, 911 passes in the corners, vette passes in the straights, vette wins.

In the late 70s and the 80s Corvettes were a joke. For the last few years they have made some serious performance cars. The overall quality is mediocre but they go like stink. I have to feel some pride in the fact America can make a car that is that fast and that inexpensive.

Porsche-O-Phile 08-15-2013 10:32 AM

Porsche is still the "one to beat" and likely will remain so for the foreseeable future. I like the new 'vettes but I'd never buy one personally...

Meh, when Chevy makes a killer SUV, then they'll have my respect.

Yes... Because CNN is who I go to for car reviews....

May be fast, but it's still fugly. ;)

Ah yes, of course. CNN's automobile staff - the gold standard of automotive journalism.

;)

I always found it strange that there is no manufacturer of real sportscars in USA. Even if you may have a different infrastructure, pollution/safety regulations and a tradition of high powered cars that are fast in a straight line and the most popular motor sport is Nascar - the country is so big there should still be a wholesome market for those who fancy the European kind of sports cars.

I love the Corvette. Beautiful car and the latest iterations are even great sportscars as far as I understand. But thats about it. One model.

Many small ones have come and gone...

Exactly my thought. CNN Money, the AUTHORITY for auto reviews. A poorly written article overall, I was waiting for the "corners like it's on rails" cliche.

I don't knock the Corvette because I'm a euro snob, I actually really like the C5 and C6, especially in Z06 form. They are also a silly amount of performance for not much money. But I can't get past just how damn ugly the C7 is. It's like a Transformer designed by committee, there's nothing cohesive or attractive about it.

+1
I always thought the Corvette as a muscle car more than a sports car.

US manufacturers demand huge profits on each vehicle. That's why pickup trucks are so popular with them - they are simple and relatively cheap to build and American buyers are less discriminating about the fit, finish, and performance of a truck than they would be a sports car.

jyl 08-15-2013 12:13 PM

The American sports car is a Mustang, Camaro, etc - the muscle car tradition.

Don't forged about the Bullit Mustang, the ultimate 944 killer...

Cruising up the interstate last Thursday, I was unexpectedly passed by an Aztec. He was going fast, so I tucked in behind in his lane. Stabalized at 94 mph. The I decided to drop back out because, well, it's an Aztec. I was afraid to be that close, going that fast. I was expecting some sort of rip in normal reality to appear, or for parts to come off.

There's also the Viper.
