Estimate the speed of this Corvair

Popular claim is that it's doing 200+ mph. I'm not convinced.

Same car different location.

No way on the 2nd video. Maybe close on the first or maybe he did it. I've stood a Talladega and watched 200 MPH. It is fast. Very fast. And it takes 500 HP 4 miles to do it with a 100 MPH rolling start. With unrestricted V8 engines at 800-900 HP they could get there by the time they reach the end of one lap from 100, or 2 1/2 miles.

Does this Corvair have that kind of beans? Then maybe so. Sounds awfully healthy.

I don't have any details other than it is running a V8. And the one video was at the Nevada Open Road Challenge 2012.
And this is how the day ended.

Looks like around 100 to me, but I can see how a video like that would be hard to gauge.

Why is there even a question about how fast it's going? Didn't they have radar set up to measure it?

Tom Keosababian hit 173 in 1974 (with a Corvair engine, not a V8 conversion) Here's a short article from 1968 as he was starting the build. He hit his 173 in 1974

Here's a later pic of it:

Take that Ralph.

I agree with everyone else on the speed of the car in the first video, not much over 100 mph.

Nice looking wheels.

No where near 200mph. I'd guess about 120.

I'd believe 200 if it were a targa instead of a corvair.

In those two pictures, it was definately slower than an unladen swallow.

Hard to imagine it can do 200mph. Aerodynamics would certainly be a limiting factor on that car.

Corvair speed.........

On a really good day on a really flat road, my 140hp Corsa coupe would do about 120 mph flat out. That is with the 4 1bbl carbs very carefully tuned with everything working just right! That was pulling just over 6,000 rpms in 4th gear. Took a little while to get there also!

Looks like the roll cage did it's job properly! I would guess that the driver managed to walk away from this one. My guess is that it wasn't the car that was unsafe, but the driver!
