hey guys..i am coming to portland!! tax free stuff!!

the second i step off that plane, i am heading to a bike shop to buy this!! probably going to Joe Bike..

retroshift!! for my cyclocross bike. this is the answer to my prayers. i love my bar-end shifters. they have a friction mode that lets me shift if everything bangs out of wack, and out of index. i've ridden my bike in bone stock mode long enough..hahha. i sometimes find my bar ends out of comfortable reach on fast downhills.

man these are cool!! i googled them. they are made in portland, so something like 20 stores sell them.

then it is off to the Danner store

i just found out a 2 year old will be traveling with us...this is gonna be interesting. i am parlaying me being hospitable into shopping carte blance with the wife..jk..i like the kid.

someone made reservations to that restaurant, "BEAST"..any good? not so sure who is watching the kid.

I don't understand? Why not just get Shimano or SRAM shifter/break levers if you need to ride the hood on a fast downhill?

vash,
We've got a set of those at work that nobody has mounted on a bike yet. One thing that I noticed when messing around with them was how far the shifter throw was. Probably not a big deal in actual use, but it sure felt funky. Also, I'm pretty sure (actually I'm positive) that 10 speed Shimano bar cons only work with 10 speed Shimano road derailleurs.

Perhaps I'll mount the Retroshift shifter/levers on my cross for the upcoming "race" season and see how they work. Currently I run a 1x8 system with a top mounted bar con on a Paul Thumbie. (For some reason, I get the Paul stuff for free )

look 171,
Lots of stuff to get mucked up with a traditional "brifter" (I hate that word) on a cross bike. Sometimes cross races get muddy.

I have never looked at cross guys during a race, what do they use? Brifters has to be superior due to their shifting location because most of the Cross riders are on their hood ready to shift or hang on to the bike for dear life. If brifters survive Roubaix, they should do OK in a cross race? I know the conditions are different. Bar end are still in cross race I assume?

Nice Cross Check vash!
I was gonna buy one of those until my boss gave me a Handsome Devil frameset as a bonus. It's not the lightest thing in the world (neither are Surly's; my main mtn bike is a Karate Monkey) but I love the feel of steel.

Might I suggest some Paul Neo Retros for the front and Touring Canti's for the rear?

Vash,
Enjoy Portland. Sort of an aquired taste. September should be great weather. We may have more bike shops per capita than any other medium city. Certainly true for strip clubs. Another thing Portland does well is micro brew. A lot of cool outdoorsy stuff around as well. Not certain if you can get out of the city with your group.

Most folks race 'normal/modern' integrated lever shifters. I race record 10 speed shifters, but am pondering a move to 1X10 w/retroshift or rival. I LOVE my campy 10 speed for cross, but racing is not easy on expensive equipment. Even if its 'rebuild-able'.

My wife is from Portland (Well, born in Ashland and moved to Portland, then I abducted her).

Beer and coffee heaven! Very foodie too!

Portland guys, what is the bicycle themed brewery? Vash, you have to check it out!

And the street market "under the bridge" on Sat/Sun, single malts at Kells, coffee at stumptown.

Great sushi town too!

Skip voodoo donut, they are good but not worth the wait (if you get by there early on a week day when there is no line worth a try).

Food carts on pioneer square if you are into that sort of thing.

Here are some ideas,

Super fun pub and super good food and beer, bikes hanging from the ceiling:

Hopworks Urban Brewery – Organic Beer

Same here (no bikes but cool location/building):

Deschutes Brewery Portland Public House | Deschutes Brewery

Needs no introduction (good burgers):

Rogue Ales

Best Rubin on the face of the planet, good beer selection, train stop right in front, somewhat funky/hole in the wall vibe:
