Experience with ADT security?

Our new home is equipped with an ADT alarm system. We got a notice from them that they can turn the thing on remotely, and we will be up and running in 24 hours without a site visit.

Seems preferable to getting a whole new alarm system installed. Any experience with ADT?

Very satisfied with ADT overall. Had it installed about 15 years ago. Started off costing us (no install fee) about $32 a month. They have just raised it to $34!
Would really like the video monitoring tied in to the cell phone though. Have not pursued that seriously yet.

Have had systems in my home and businesses for 30 years.

I don't recall ever interacting enough with any of the providers to form any opinion on them whatsoever.

15 years here as well. They just replaced my keypad no charge & gave me new signs - because I asked.

I went through hell with them when I moved recently. They would not disconnect my service without jumping through many hoops. Faxes sent, letters mailed, phone calls.... horrible customer service.

I found a cheaper option with features.

Good luck.

I like how their commercial makes their call center seem like Nasa space control central. Right.

They charge about 3x's the monitoring fees that you can get with other co's but they make it easy to get up and running.

They're very good but they're very expensive by comparison to most others.

We had them to start in our house. They were 2x-3x what it cost elsewhere. We switched to Comcast home monitoring. Less than half ADT.

So your saying that if I have an alarm, I shouldn't expect a detachment of Navy Seals repelling from Blackhawks above my house. That is indeed disappointing.

That's the response to an anti-Obama posting on the internet. Not a response to a threat against your family.

if it's hardwired into the house might as well. Lots of guys convert the ADT equipment to work with less expensive monitoring svcs- swapping out MOBO that kind of thing..

However, ADT is brand name, who knows how good the other services are. Piece of mind for only $30 / mo ain't bad...

I did a bunch of research about home alarms, and everything that I found said that the service that you get from this sort of place is not as good or reliable and more expensive than if you got service from a smaller, local company.

If/when I ever get a home alarm, it won't be ADT, Comcast, etc....

Cajundaddy 08-22-2013 10:15 AM

I had ADT at a retail dealership for 10 years. I found them to be expensive and pretty unresponsive the few times I had issues. Really long service contracts that protected them and not me. I do think an alarm system serves as a deterrent but I choose not to use one on my house. We have other deterrents. :)

We've got a regional (Atlanta) alarm company with the new house - and they require no contract - so we can fire them any month if needed. Almost any alarm company can monitor any brand of "modern" alarm. Most will probably swap out the motherboard as part of the deal if that is required.
