Vets say my dog is going to die . . .
She's an 8 year old Doxie. For the past month or so, she's had times when she seemed a little more tired than usual. But generally acted the same.
The last week or so, she really started slowing down. Laying around more than usual, not barking as much, etc. My wife looked at her gums last Thursday, and they seemed pale/whitish. We called the vet who told us to bring her in immediately, which we did. Blood test showed low red blood cell count, 14%. The vet said that is really low and dangerous. Xrays were negative, no noticeable tumors, obstructions, etc. We took her immediately to another, larger facility for a blood transfusion of concentrated red blood cells, and for a comprehensive blood panel. This blood test ruled out many things, and they say was highly indicative (or conclusive?) of Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. This is where red blood cells are prematurely destroyed by the body's own immune system. The cause in our case is not know, which is not uncommon. It can be an infection, a reaction to something, cancer, or just the immune system gone haywire. She was given the transfusion and put on steroids (Prednesone) to suppress the immune system, and Doxycline (an antibiotic) to help if there is an infection causing it. After the transfusion, her red blood cell count was 43%. Within 12 hours it dropped to 36%. 4 days later (today) it is now down to 20%. That of course is pretty disheartening. The vet tonight said it doesn't look good. Has anyone had a dog go through this? I know there are some vets here, have you ever dealt with this? Sad days . . . |

It's sad when good dogs get old, especially before their time.
My thoughts are with you as I listen to my 14 year old rotty / pit bull / husky cross snore...

Yes. Spock. He responded to the steroids. He lived three more years. Our Vet believes that it was caused by over inoculation OR inoculations that should have been administered with more time between injections. I am very sorry to hear this.

Dachshunds are tough little dogs. Our "Speedster" survived Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever and a few years later almost lost her again due to poisoning.
Speedster says hang in there!

I really don't know right off the top of my head but will get back to you later this AM. Normally steroids would be the Tx for this...if the Dx is correct. I'd say to get her to the nearest University Vet Clinic ASAP for now. There are blood parasites similar to Malaria...be sure to have them ruled out...

the vet (ex-vet) prescribed rimadyl for my chocolate lab, which effectively caused what your dog is suffering from. the internet is full of warnings about that drug and labs. i hope he makes it.

My first Lab Earl went through a similar arc...in his case it was kidney failure.
The deal we make with dogs is that they will love us and we'll love them...we trade our complicated lives for the simplicity of a tail that wags, a paw in our laps. I can't think of a man or women I like or admire that doesn't light up at the sight of a dogs affection. Tough days ahead. Earl died in my arms and there was no place either of us would have rather been. Those moments are some of the most profound in my life. You'll do the right thing, come what may. My best.
