Latex paint on fire hood

While prepping mom's house to sell, painting contractor sprayed interior with Sherwin Williams latex including a steel fire hood. He claims it is OK and heat will not be an issue. But if it does bubble/discolor, will return and make it right. Don't have much confidence in his return as once he receives final payment there is no incentive for him.

This hood is less than 2' above fire grate and gets pretty warm. I am trying to contact a SW rep once I have identified the exact product used. Seems I read somewhere latex paint should not be used in an area where 120 degrees is exceeded.

Any professional opinions out there?

Vince

I'm not a pro but that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

What possessed him to do that? He's a idiot.

Just tell him you did not and do not want it painted.

You are the client.

Sound like he die not want to spend the time to mask it off. Yeah heat resistance, right.

Standard wall paint can handle about 200 deg. Higher quality acrylic products can go as high as 300.

How hot does the hood get?

What did he use?

No problem. As long as he doesn't mind not being paid until you are sure it is correct. Otherwise fix it now. No problem at all.

Don't pay him. It's not ok, wasn't prepped properly, and should not be painted.

Only way idiots learn is to make them do it right. Eventually they either learn it's cheaper and easier to do the job right the first time, or they go out of business.

I like this idea best, no need to be a dick, you just have to give him two easy choices.

Agreed. Payment is rendered when the job is completed to client's satisfaction.

How hard is it to mask something off? Takes literally minutes - not hours/days/weeks. And if he were going to paint it, why not use high-temp ceramic paints designed for high-temperatures.

First of all, it is kinda hard to find "latex" paint these days. Get the info off the label. 2nd, what or how was the hood finished, you didn't say. If this is the first coat of paint done on site, you may have a disaster on hand. I mean like catching on fire.

There are plenty of water borne high heat paints today. But that's all that can be on a high temp surface, not just over the top. You may have to strip the paint. No problem as vinyl acrylic paints strip easily.

I edited this a little.

Thanks to all for the replies. Painter will be furnishing info on exact product used and then I'll check with Sherwin Williams and see if it has a heat rating.

Milt-This hood was painted previously-1975 or so and has held up great.

Thanks again and have a great weekend.

Well, you know what I meant. It's a matter of semantics. If I was the painter, I'd be joining in to find out what kind of performance one can expect out of the material used. For 2 reasons: one, liability — and 2, if it will fly I'd tell the customer to pay me and take his problem somewhere else.
