i got out-mountain biked, by a jogger.
damn it. we came to the same crossroad at the same time. he was jogging, i was riding. i offered to let him go first..i always stop along the way and use my binoculars to look for animals. he said, "no, you go..you're gonna pass me anyways"..
ahem..ok. he looked like a navy seal or marine. cropped tight, tall, fit as all get out. so i rode off. up this long hill. i beat him to the top, but i was wheezing..like an old man. this was my first mountain ride since getting my lung infection. and i felt it. he was right on my ass. hahahha.. i get to the top. put on my best.."whatever" face..and i kid you not..he passed me in mere seconds. he must have been right behind me. thank god, he went down hill and ran over the horizon..and i took a small uphill to get to a big downhill. he was barely breathing hard. :D i got three flats on the way down. just not my day..still had an awesome time. what do we know about trail running? sprain ankle waiting to happen? better than road runs? i have great off road trails all around my house. i might give it a slow go. |
That happened to me yesterday. :D I passed him, then had to take a rest, he passed me and was gone.

All cleaned up! That was right after I got home, still dusty. I managed to rinse it off a little on the trail.

Vash, running is all lungs just like mtb. I ran cross country in HS just to keep in shape during winter so I can get my lungs a head start when road season comes around. Trail running will get you a reaqlly strong heart and lungs because its all up hill, so its mtb. Many runner make great cyclist and they are usually great climbers.

Running uses totally different muscles than cycling. Okay, probably not "totally" different. But enough different that you can be a strong cyclist and suck at running, and vice-versa. That said, your heart and lungs will be all set for it. And all the hiking you do might help too. All I know is that I can ride 100 miles but can barely run 2.

John, I think muscles are a lot easier to train or get them into shape then heart or lungs. Climbing like MTB is not all leg muscles, its all lungs. Most people run out of lung (and heart) way before they run out of legs on a long hill. I know I do.

Yes, it is heart/lungs but also training of large and small muscle groups that are not necessarily used much in MTB. In trail running, there is no "coasting." You'll likely find that running long, steep stretches of downhill are not the easy part of your early runs. You will need to train your foot and leg muscles to adjust to irregular surfaces with inconsistent traction with every step. These are subtleties that come from training on the trail--different from riding or even road running--but well worth it and easy to achieve.

Calves and lower back. These never limit my cycling, but are the first to scream when I'm running.

I love trail running. Makes the whole running thing a whole lot easier for me as I get lost in the scenery. Fortunately I have some super trails just down the street from my house.
Yeah, you have to watch where you step or you might roll an ankle. There's a level of focus required to get down a rocky trail in one piece. I was just out in the road bike and a younger fellow passed me. I rode with him for 8 miles and then backed off, he was riding me into the ground. I needed a good ride today but didn't want to kill myself.

gonna have to be steep before some runner gets by me.
you can always run them over on the downside...... eventually trail running will catch up to your knees, unless you are one of the lucky ones. Sure is a lot of fun, in the N. Shore mountains here. |

About 10+ years ago ( when I was much fitter ), I got yelled at by a road biker chick because I was on the right side of the bike trail ( the rule is to be on the left ). However, in this particular area, there is a big wide trail on the right. When I can, I run on the trails rather than the asphalt. So, I guess we were both right. Anyway, she yelled at me as she flashed by........whatever, I was running way off the "Bike trail".........Just after she yelled at me she hit a steep grade and yes, I caught her and passed her. She was trying like hell to hold me off and I was trying like hell to catch her, ha.

Hiking definitely works different muscles for me. Eventually the muscles that pivot my foot up start to hurt and then the bottom of my feet feel like they have been stretched too far. Those things make the downhills more painful than the uphills for me. I need to get back on the bike after a hike to cool down so I don't cramp.
I don't have the lungs to run very far uphill but I can maintain a pretty good sub-running pace, but my knees get swollen if I do too much hiking. So I stick to cycling. If I don't have the fun of the downhills on a bike it makes the workout a lot more work and less pleasant. I go further and faster (push myself more) cycling on the road. |
I was riding along at a fairly brisk pace, not racing, on a bike path in town about 15 years when this guy just ran right past me (!)
I thought jeez am I that old, that out of shape; about to die? Later I found out it was Alberto Salazar training for the Olympics. This place is called "Track-Town, USA" for a reason. |
