Then I talk about the need to find a balance and think of analog/digital as yin/yang, then we end with an analog musical conversation (perform "My Romance").

Might not make sense in the thumbnail but in 15 minutes (11 of talk, 4 of performance) it covers a lot of ground.

Ok... That's ridiculously cool. Can't wait for the video!

Ahhh . . . now you made me go learn something, Todd. Uncanny valley. I had to Google it.

I look forward to your talk. A very interesting topic.

I thought this was Ted. Sounds more like Mensa...

That is really great. I too had to look up "uncanny valley." Assumed it was a movie from the San Fernando valley.... :D

speeder 09-17-2013 11:21 PM

I was not familiar with TED, so I checked out their website. I was still unfamiliar. :)

Apparently a roving lecture series? At any rate, your talk/performance sounds like it was very entertaining and educational. I look forward to the video!

tweezers74 09-18-2013 01:36 AM

Awesome! Love it! Can't wait to see the video. you packed all of that in 15 minutes? :)

emcon5 10-07-2013 02:41 PM

So where is the video?

nostatic 10-07-2013 02:44 PM

Evidently some delay with the guy who is cutting it. I'm going to ping the organizers and see what is up. If worse comes to worse, I'll get the source and hack something together.

techweenie 10-07-2013 03:02 PM

Somehow I missed this thread when it started. Just wanted to say congratulations for being there and tackling such an interesting topic. Will definitely watch/listen.

RANDY P 10-07-2013 06:29 PM

youtube link?

slakjaw 10-07-2013 06:52 PM

Awesome. Nostatic this is awesome man.

ZOO 10-08-2013 03:00 AM

TED talks are awesome. My students in secondary school love them. Kids don't watch tv, really. They watch media on YouTube and TED and other sites. The TED series is always engaging.

Porsche-O-Phile 10-08-2013 05:26 AM

TED rocks.

So when do we get to see this thing? C'mon... Inquiring minds and all that...

Steve Carlton 10-08-2013 07:05 AM

I'm thinking it never happened...

porsche4life 10-08-2013 07:28 AM

It was all just a figment of Todd's imagination?

ZAMIRZ 10-17-2013 11:23 AM

Todd gave a presentation in my Leadership & Executive Development Class on monday and we debriefed yesterday.

His work is pretty interesting, especially if you're a veteran or currently in the armed forces. His lesson was very relevant to team building and effectively working in teams in the business world.

I was pretty hooked on the presentation and it WAS NOT canned, he had made one specifically for our class, which was appreciated. Speaking of which, in this particular class (which has a long wait list, I was lucky to get it and am glad I did!), the other presenters are guys like Rick Carusso - west coast real estate developer, Jack Hollis - SVP of Toyota Motor Sales Marketing, and Blake Nordstrom - Nordstrom family, retail fashion department stores.

Anyway, here's the debrief slide (some of it won't make sense since it's very much in the context of the class and lessons), and thanks again for coming by Todd, I'll be looking for your Ted Talk when it comes out.

Was a very cool coincidence to run into Amir. Glad it was well received - I always like guest lecturing in that class. The "chaos" exercise is usually pretty interesting. Unfortunately there wasn't enough time to do the "levitating tent pole" exercise. I always change up talks for a particular group and usually end up deviating from the plan anyway. No plan survives first contact.

As for the TEDx video, still waiting on the editor. Will post the link as soon as I get it. Am hoping there wasn't a tech snafu and I asked about getting source but TED has strict rules on when/how/why the video content is dealt with.

Todd, you're smarter, handsomer, thinner, and taller than I ever imagined :D

RANDY P 12-26-2013 06:33 PM

nice work Todd!

rjp

genrex 12-26-2013 06:34 PM

Especially smarter! :) Thank you for posting that, Todd. I'm going to watch that and learn a thing or two. I'm so tired of hearing about the two traditional schools of management style... *sigh*

Amazing, really profound. (Except the part that gave me flashbacks to organic chem :)

Seems like the roughness between black and white, or zeros and ones, is being conquered with higher "resolution" made possible by more powerful computers. It seems only a matter of time before animations can be indistinguishable from originals. What's still needed now is the originality and creativity that the living things still provide. I wonder how quickly AI will be able to replace the original creative force. And when it gets good, I suspect we will really need to worry about the 'Skynet problem.'

herr_oberst 12-26-2013 07:05 PM

Todd, that was a great lecture. It seems as though you are as comfortable in left brain mode as you are using the right brain.

(but I'm wondering about the Jag shirt - won't the SC get a little jealous?)

72doug2,2S 12-26-2013 08:40 PM

You don't look like your Avatar much, not a bad thing.

A couple of summers ago we went on holiday to Niagara Falls. I had made the trip mix, as I usually do, and it contained Roberta Flack's Killing me Softly. After it was finished my son said why is she singing about Islam? My wife and I both looked at each other and said, "What did you say?" He said, "Yeah, that lady was singing about Killing me softly with Islam, why is she singing that?"

My wife and I about peed our pants.

One question I have is on the creepy valley. Just because we have the technology to do something, doesn't mean we should do it, right? Here's my context, up until now taking a life created in the image of God was just about as bad offense as you could take. In the future, we will need to ask ourselves whether the creation of life, digitally creepy, in the image of man is an even greater offense.

Kind of like Data in the Star Trek, the next generation.

Don Plumley 12-26-2013 08:40 PM

Beth and I just watched it - very cool. Would like to hear a longer version diving deeper into it. And more music too!

nostatic 12-26-2013 09:25 PM

Thanks for the props - it is a fascinating topic (to me at least), and one I've been working on for almost 20 years now. Lot's of 2nd and 3rd order effects from the conversion to digital that we still are just beginning to uncover and it's only going to get even more convoluted. The resolution issue is part of the equation, but I hold that due to the fundamental underlying differences, all the oversampling in the world still won't turn one into the other. They are just different at their core. And that's…ok...

As for the music, that's getting close too. Just need sax solos on two tracks, then it is final mix, master, and off to iTunes for the new album. A few teaser rough tracks from the studio portion:

https://soundcloud.com/nostatic-live/elanor-short-r3

https://soundcloud.com/nostatic-live/together-short-r2

https://soundcloud.com/nostatic-live/two-r3-short

I'm up to r5 on the mixes and after spending the last three days listening I've got some more things to tweak/fix but most of it is close. Should have the album done Jan or Feb.

trekkor 12-26-2013 10:51 PM

The t-shirt reminded me of a map of some unknown track.

The chord progression on bass was great and should be heard more often.

Interesting topic. Or topics? It seemed to jump around a bit but I suppose it's hard to cram a theory and examples into that short of a time.

I'm watching it, totally transfixed, and when they finally show an audience member it is one of my best friends! (11:46). His name is Bill Moore and he plays guitar and he is one seriously smart guy. Then they show audience again and it's two more good friends, (they were obviously there together), one of them runs the Bungalow space at the Sheridan. Was the talk there? He invited me as well and I did not go, sure would have if I'd known it was you.

You're killing it in life, congrats! :)

speeder 12-27-2013 12:02 AM

Do all TED talks wind up on youtube? I have another friend who just gave one, this is her:

Nanea Reeves | UCLA Anderson School of Management

Can't find a video, though.

emcon5 12-27-2013 10:52 AM

That was good Todd. And good news, you don't look like Billy-Bob Thronton any more.

DonDavis 12-27-2013 11:46 AM

Good stuff. It ended too quickly for me. Is there more info by you that I can read or watch?

Aw man, he's taller and better looking than BBT. Probably smarter, too.

Credit where due...

flatbutt 12-27-2013 01:09 PM

Yes the lecture was quite good but your guitar technique is exquisite.

azasadny 12-27-2013 01:41 PM

Excellent!!

ZAMIRZ 12-27-2013 01:56 PM

Awesome Todd, congratulations! I threw it up on the Marshall Facebook page so all my classmates can see it as well.

genrex 12-27-2013 06:08 PM

I'm sharing the link with my friends also.

It's very educational and entertaining. Especially memorable for me is when Todd talks about getting to know people over the internet. The "digital person" is the person we become familiar with, and that person can be somewhat different than the real person. Internet dating is an example of getting to know a person's digital persona, as is this forum. Not that there's anything wrong with that! as Jerry Seinfeld would say. It is fascinating getting to know people across the miles and over the years. :)

It is really strange the useless trivia that finds a home in my melon, when more important stuff doesn't always stick.

For example, I remember Todd posting a Jack Olsen style selfie, at Laguna Seca, that he kind of looked like Billy Bob Thornton. A quick search for threads started by Todd turned up this:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/238021-paradise-found-laguna-seca.html

The same photo was posted in the ultimate-jack-olsen-self-portrait-thread, and got some good-natured Photoshop ridicule:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/237982-ultimate-jack-olsen-self-portrait-thread-3.html#post2089805

So for some reason, I remember an internet post, from someone I have never met, from 8 years ago, but I generally have to look at my cell phone to remember my home phone number, which I have had for over a year now.

Maybe there is a Ted talk that explains that.....

BlueSkyJaunte 12-30-2013 03:29 PM

Great little presentation. I myself struggle with my kids' over-mediation (is that a word?) by digital/tech.

I know why you played your YY Fodera but I think your Rob Allen would've sounded better--and you could've used the fretless as yet another example of "analog". :)

daepp 12-30-2013 09:13 PM

That was amazing - and really cool.

And as for soul/digital, I kept thinking you would look like a Marx brother. Seriously stupid on my part, but I suppose I've gotten used to your avatar after all these years...
