AMm I crazy? Seriously thinking about selling the 911
I really like the 911, like no other car I've owned. I'm just having trouble pulling the trigger on hot rodding it. I have quite the collection of suspension upgrades and wheels to get me going. The vision is lightning it up with a 3.4 and close ratio 915. For some reason it just doesn't seem right. It's a relatively low mileage Carrera that's very original with absolutely no rust. The spendy upgrades with little return in value is eating at me.
I really want a traditional steel hotrod. A 32' Ford 3 window coupe would be #1 followed by a 5 window. Then 33' and 34' coupes, Model A coupes and pickups of that vintage. I'm thinking the 32' through 34' coupes are out. Am I crazy? Will I regret selling the 911? Real hotrods are truly where I think my hearts at. Just thinking out loud. Dean

I know what you are saying, I would love a 3 window coupe hot rod myself. Is there anyway you can keep both?
Are you thinking of a new one (fiber) or going old school? If you cannot keep both, a lot would depend on how drivable it is. Still, from an investment point of view, the 911s keep increasing in price. I would save it for the pure investment alone, the next few years I predict some strong increases in values. Also, the driving experience in the 911 is hard to beat.

Life is short, do what you want. Enjoy life.
While not growing on trees, there are many 911's on the market all the time. If you want another one you'll find one. Good luck |

Whoa - a hotrod from the 30s certainly is not even in the same zip code as a 911. What do you use your 911 for? And why have you amassed a heap of parts and not installed any?
I would do both. Get the parts on the 911 and start saving for the hot rod. Or alternatively, leave the 911 stock and sell the pile of speed parts. But I have a use for my 911. I love driving it on curved roads. Something impossible to enjoy at the same level in a hotrod. G |

Well, tuning a Carrera has a purpose that a '32 3 window can't even begin to touch. Why did you buy the suspension stuff? You obviously have thought of tracking the car or chasing in some curves somewhere. You now having 2nd thoughts about that?
I sure did. Expensive, expensive, expensive. Not hard to write a car off not to mention buying yourself a few days off mending if it gets bad. I know, that can happen at any time anywhere, but guess what? I seldom ran the track or the canyons on a big run that someone didn't go home on a trailer or flatbed. I could not afford that than and certainly can't afford that now. I got out of Porsches with the exception of the wife's Boxster, a very worthy car if I need to get my rocks off. Which I don't, so it sits with 58,000 on the clock still on the factory brakes. Sounds to me like you're looking for a different kind of car experience. One that you can get a lot of enjoyment out of cruising the streets and hitting the shows. There's a huge hot rod community out there. I've walked both sides of the street more than once. Now, I do the rod shows and still have as much fun as I did years ago. But, I haven't found the ultimate Zekemobile yet. Sounds like you are closer than I to finding yours. |

How often do you drive the 911?
I drove mine as a daily driver, rain, shine, flooding, etc.... I bought a miata when I sold it to try to get as close as possible while getting into something cheaper. I don't regret selling mine because it was the right thing to do at the time (financial reasons), but I very, very much missed the car. Fortunately the miata after a few upgrades (tire, suspension, etc...) I had a very fun, somewhat similar driving experience. I still miss the 911 even now that I have a turbo miata that's probably as fast in a straight line as a stock SC and reasonably quick around a corner. I will have another Porsche again someday. If you only drive it every once in a while, you may not miss it that much.

If hot rods are where your at then go be happy. I've thought about selling the 69 a lot. I haven't driven it in 3 weeks. A spider has built a really nice web between the DS mirror and the door....

Hotrods I love, still vintage with lots of hands on work. Would definitely drive it all over. Just not on the twisties like I like. Then again my other cars are BMWs(plus as long as the top goes down, I think the wife would drive a Porsche. Manual trans, not as a sales person). Like I said just thinking out loud. I really want to get this right. I love the 911, but hotrods make me excited too.

Having a 911 is really nice, but it's not the only automotive experience out there. I think your more rational mind is speaking when you say, "The spendy upgrades with little return in value is eating at me." Plainly speaking, it's money down the drain. Plus my feelings are more and more against cutting up the older (and getting older) 911's to make hotrods out of them - especially relatively low mileage ones with no rust and still original. I can relate to your feelings about letting it go, but I think you would enjoy a different experience. There is a reason you are feeling hesitant about it.

I was in the same boat as you. After driving the 911 for over a decade my desires changed. I no longer wanted to fly around a track... Been there done that. Time for a cruiser. It was a tough choice.
Sold my perfect 911SC and bought a Corvair turbo Convertible, a car I have always wanted to restore and own. Frankly after 13 years I was bored with the 911. Enjoying the new ride.... Shopping for a rotisserie right now... Big restoration in the works. You should not feel guilty about wanting to move on from Porsche. Mine was lots of fun but it was time to move on to the next challenge. I miss the pelican community but have found a great new community of Corvair owners. You will find the same for your hot rod Fords. I am amazed at the attention I get in the Corvair... I can't go anywhere without someone wanting to talk and check out the car. The 911 rarely got any attention around town.

1984 79,500 not concourse, but very nice survivor. I usually don't see cars as nice and certainly not as clean. The nicer ones usually have lower miles and have/had fastidious owners. Pic taken tonight. Car is dirty and got caught in the rain(first time since I've owned it).

I sold my 911, my wife told me not to, I did it anyway. Now I look at them all the time and get that stuff from my wife, I told you not to do it. I think it was the best car-of about 50- that I have ever owned.
