Caught a break from the state of Georgia...
Went to pay for the tag and taxes on my F150 this week. The bill was supposed to be a total of about $220 for the tag and advalorem taxes. Turns out that Georgia passed a new tax law that allows owners of vehicles recently purchased to pay a one time advalorem tax rather than getting hit for a couple hundred dollars each year. That I knew about. What I didn't know (the good part) is that the sales tax that I paid when buying the truck could be used as the one time tax! So, instead of $220, I got out for $20!!! As long as I own the vehicle, my yearly fee will be ....... $20 (for the tag)! Thanks, Georgia!!!

I'll will never forget registering my wife's Lexus in WA for the first time. Because the city of Seattle was attempting to build a monorail (No really, a god damn monorail like they have at Disney land), the city of Seattle had insanely high tariffs to pay for it. Cost to register a new Lexus? $800!!!!!!!
The next year it went down to like $600. And the year after that, they abandon the dumb Fbomb idea after blowing $200 million of the taxpayers money on 'studies'. Did we see a refund? Of course not. |

Just changed my drivers license and registration to Florida. It cost me $320 just to title and register the 944.

The county recently sent me a letter to notify me that they are moving my vehicle registrations from another county to here. I own property in both, and have had my vehicles registered in the other county since 1985, but I changed by drivers license info and they want my cars registered in the same county as reflected on my license.
County taxes on my 996 went up from $163 per year to $298 per year. Same car. Same value. One county over. Huzzah.

But wait until you buy another car in Ga. Along with the tax change referenced by Fred, they did away with the sales tax exemption on private owner sales. Previously, you paid no sales tax when buying from a PO. You paid the full 7% only on dealer sales. Now you pay 7% on all sales. And...not on the actual price paid, but rather on their "list" of retail values.
When I bought my last motorcycle (from a private owner) my GA sales tax was 7% of almost $2k above my actual purchase price. Never fear, GA is not giving money away! Last edited by Chocaholic; 09-07-2013 at 04:52 AM.. |
