Mini Four Teen Wood or Synthetic?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a Wood vs Synthetic stock?
The state is fixing to make long spoons with removable magazines illegal, so I am in the market. Figure to buy American, amazing how similar the ten two two and the mini four teen are. The wife has been illin', hence she has not been up to taking an test drives on anything hand held.

I bought a used 14 with a banged up wood stock. Purchased an aftermarket Hogue rubber overmoulded stock and never looked back. I don't quite know how to describe it, but it's not soft rubber, it's indestructible and it would never slip from your grip. Fit was perfect.
I think the oem synthetic stock is more like hard plastic, but truthfully I'm getting beyond my real knowledge here.

I have wood stock. I prefer the look and frankly you'll get less "assault gun" attention. Just looks like a "hunting rifle." Very fun gun to shoot - a favorite of both my son and wife. As soon as it gets cooler we have to head up to the desert to throw some lead downrange...

If you shoot in wet areas buy the plastic. Same if you'll be banging the stock around

When I bought a mini14 they only came in wood... I replaced with a fixed synthetic stock from Choate... good stuff.
High cap mags are expensive and other than factory ones I'm not sure what works in them... of course, since you are in Cali, that is a fairly moot point. Instead of the mini-30 I'd get a Yugo SKS and make it Cali compliant (remove GL and bayo). Cheaper, better, quick reloading with stripper clips. I'd also look at the Saiga offerings...

I considered the 30 and the 14. Advantage to the 14, as my buddy has one and is LEO, hence ability to obtain stuff to feed through it is much less hampered. He has the accoutrements to go with it also. My wife asked why I was shopping for something like that. I told her, she rolled her eyes and said, "Fooking California."

I'd go plastic. Lighter. The wood will last forever, however.
The mags on the mini are unique aren't they? (menaing expensive). I believe (not 100% sure) that the mags for a Kel Tec SU16 are AR mags. It's not a Ruger, but Kel Tec has their fans. If you can find one, might be worth a look.

Personally I would go for the wood, unless you are going to be putting the gun somewhere abusive, such as in crawling around in the brush with it

One of our AZ based Pelicans has frequently posted the accuracy virtues of going synthetic on a long gun. But we're talking a Mini here so it's generally not going to be the most accurate system out there...generally. I bought a stainless/synthetic Mini from a private party and replaced the stock with wood. Looks great and I have not noticed any degradation in accuracy. As Todd already alluded to - not so 'black rifle' dressed this way. Might be a concern in CA down the road.
