Gears Evolved in Insects for Jumping!!

If you are a science geek like me or just a gearhead like all of us .....this is cooler than glow-in-the-dark dog crap....(btw , a project i am working on..)

just published today in Science Magazine: First example of true toothed gears used for synchronous propulsion of insects. This gearing allows both legs to "pop" synchronously, hence propelling organism in a straight line.

gears are toothed and cocked also.

now do they come with, or have they evolved an LSD!! Lets ask Matt Monson!!!

amazing ... ..a great example of what evolutionary scientists call "Biomechanical Mimicry" I wonder if the "Intelligent design" folks will jump all over this!!

enjoy frank

Amazing!

Cool

Do they use SWEPCO?

Mrmerlin 09-12-2013 04:04 PM

Nice, straight cut gears, more noise but stronger

sc_rufctr 09-12-2013 04:11 PM

Amazing and very cool. Evolution or Gods work? ;)

Also, did you know that a particular Eagle or bird of prey (not sure which species) has a locking mechanism around the tendons in his feet?
Once he's got hold of something, that's it. There's no getting away.

Naturally occurring Kendal ;)

Not trying to PARF this thread out, but seriously...to me this is just one more example of God's intelligent design. Surely this wasn't just some random occurance.

you might want to read up on developmental fields and segmentation

HardDrive 09-12-2013 05:05 PM

Very, very cool.

UconnTim97 09-12-2013 05:11 PM

That's really cool!

Makes you wonder just what's lurking in the rest of the universe. Or other universes.

Actually, helical are stronger because there are more teeth in mesh. Straight-cut are noisier but have less friction because it is pure rolling contact (with a proper involute tooth profile). So, racers use them because they free up some power and reduce heat in the oil.

thanks for the gear mesh lesson

It seems you already know the most important point of what you just said, you put it in bold. You put the words "to me" in bold. That's key to your way of thinking. This seems, to you, that this is an example of god's design, so you consider it a fact. You are mistaking what somethings seems like to you with actual facts.

And you're mistaking what you've said here with something that makes sense.

Yes, I said, and even emphasized, "to me", because that's exactly what I meant. Period. Go play your little athiest attack-dog BS somewhere else, with someone who gives a ***** about your comments. You choose not to believe...good for you. I choose to believe. Good for me. See? It's a win-win all the way around.

Now go play...and have a great weekend! SmileWavy

Just forwarded the article to an entomologist friend. He lives for stuff like that. Very cool.

Why the harsh words?

My conclusions on scientific matters come from the evidence, your conclusions come from your gut.

The problem with that is that you start to think that your gut is "proof" and then use your gut to form conclusions on things that effect me and the entire world.

It was people who followed their gut that flew planes into buildings. That's not a win-win for anybody, that's lose-lose.
