North Carolina

Potentially relocating to NC. Currently, Fayetteville and Greenville areas are under consideration. Have never been to either area. Any insight would be appreciated.

Prettiest state in the country. Ocean to the east, mountains to the west. Asheville is beautiful and quaint, Raleigh-Durham (Research Triangle) is progressive and has a nice college feel (Duke Univ). Outer Banks/Kitty Hawk is a great getaway.

Wife and I plan to retire in NC. Can't go wrong.

i dont care for Fayetteville, but i have only been there once or twice. both are places where you can get out and get some property, then it really does not matter.

IIRC Greenville is mostly a college-only downtown, medium-sized, but surrounded by the stix.
Had some decent bars and bands.

NC is generally "anything you want" and varies greatly depending upon where in the state you end up. I spent five of the best years of my life in Greenville (ECU)...undoubtedly the hottest and most humid hell hole I've ever endured, and I'm EXTREMELY heat tolerant and have lived in FL before also . Fayetteville would be similar imo. That area is referred to as "down east" (sandy coastal plain) and is pretty much devoid of all of the "positive NC" attributes mentioned above, but YMMV. Don't mean to insult anyone who lives there, but that's just the way I see it. While in college, I'd bet 1/3 of the students were from up north, and the heat index simply kicked many of their butts and they never did acclimate (although some do). Don't know what is attracting you to those particular cities, but I wouldn't even consider either of them...but that's just me. Good luck!

ps: Have a cousin who married a Major stationed at Ft. Bragg...he commutes from the Raleigh area (Apex) each day. I have lived in Cary (worked for IBM at RTP) fresh out of college. An hour east (on the coast) or an hour west, and it's a whole 'nuther state

Stay clear of Fayetteville! Fort Bragg is right nearby, so there's an overabundance of titty bars, pawn shops, liquor stores, etc. in the downtown area. Lots of drugs around there too. When I was stationed at Fort Bragg many years ago, it was known as 'Fort Skag'. 'Skag' being a slang term for heroin. The place was a total s#!thole back then...I can only imagine what it must be like now.

That being said, the western part of the state is absolutely beautiful! Great Smokey Mountains, Blue Ridge Pkwy, Asheville. The coastal area is also very nice. Several big NASCAR teams are headquartered around the Charlotte area and there are good hi-tech employment opportunities in the 'Research Triangle' area around Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

I have to go to Fayetteville fairly often. Can't stand the place. Very tacky. Also very high crime.
Greenville is OK. At least it is closer to the coast.

That warning is supposed to keep somebody away?? Sounds more like something the Chamber of Commerce should put on their website!

There is a active group of redneck Porsche owners over in the Charlotte area. And a really good Porsche shop in Denver, NC. And the SC group holds some annual events, but you have to post your own bail afterward.

I live near fayetteville, Im stationed on Ft Bragg. I agree with most of what has been said concerning this area. Unless you already have a decent job lined up here in Fayetteville then I would look at another town. There are nice areas in Fayetteville (haymont) but for the most part it's pretty typical of a military town. Never heard it called Fayett-Skag but Fayett-Nam is pretty common.

My sister lives in Broadway (1/2 hour northwest of Fayetteville) she is an army brat.....has lived there since 88.
Fayetteville has gone downhill in our opinion, that's why she has a small farm well away from it....
I regularly vacationed in Wilmington, hell we got married on Carolina beach.......
Love Wilmington.....but still gets too cold in the winter for me.....
So we moved to Florida lol

Dang Keith, that was around 1955, before air conditioning was invented, right???

All kidding aside, Keith pretty much nailed it. Unless there is a specific reason, there are better parts of NC.
