It's cool but it's also seriously boring TV. That time lapse helped. :D

A week long unedited mini-series version would still be an improvement over most TV :D

Something tells me there will be more than just a few celebratory beverages drank, and well deserved.

Shuffleboard on the Lido Deck at 2:00.

Pretty amazing bit of engineering and ingenuity. However, at $800MM+ for the salvage operation, I think somebody (and/or their insurance co.) is getting screwed.

+1 What's the scrap value of that boat? No were near $800M IMO

VINMAN 09-17-2013 05:13 AM

Seems like a pretty huge waste of time and money, for something that is going to be scrapped.

DonDavis 09-17-2013 06:25 AM

It can't be left there. And just dragging it out to sink would damage a lot of coral. The cruise line has to do the right thing and remove it properly. That's a fair amount of scrap metal, too. Nothing to sneeze at, for sure.

Btw, there are 2 bodies still missing. If raising the ship locates them, it's money well spent, imho.

Maybe the hold is full of doubloons

widebody911 09-17-2013 07:28 AM

They're expending so much effort on the "salvage" because this is up close and personal in a high-profile tourist area, so any environmental damage would be very visible and bad for PR. If this had happened in China, India, some other 3rd-world country like Detroit, they would have simply cut it up on the spot, enviro damage be damned.

VINMAN 09-17-2013 07:52 AM

Good point.

Just figured it would have been cheaper to do a on the spot dismantle.

One of the news reports said the boat was worth $800 million.

They also said it weighs 115,000 tonne's

I got $150 a ton last week

So under $20 million for scrap.

Sawed right through (rather substantial) flywheel and turbocharger:
