Let me give a different view. I've had a 1972 911 E and then a 1986 Carrera that I had for 12 years and completely rebuilt. Both were fun cars, but neither saw that much driving time, especially in the summer as no AC. Bought a Boxster last December just to compare it to the Carrera (which I still had). Sold the Carrera a couple of months ago. It was a great car, but the Boxster is a hell of a lot of fun and you can't beat the prices. I don't miss any car even though I have enjoyed them all. To me it is more fun to experience something new.

I sold my 944 for a Miata... the Miata is a fun little car but I miss the 944 every time I drive it (the Miata).

OK parts are cheap(er) but it is a PITA to work on.. and the folks over on miata form are mostly wankers.

I am with you on this. If you have not tried a Boxster then go have some fun and try one. A short drive on the twisties will quickly sell you. Plus modern a/c, heated seats. What's not to love?

Although I am currently enjoying my old Miata, I know what you mean about the flat six experience. There are times when I miss the old E a little bit, but not as often since I got the MX5.

If the flat six is what you want, ignore the 944 proponents. As stated above, the 944 is probably a better car than an old 911, but is in no way the same experience. Buy what you want.
Keep your eyes open. Jake (notfarnow) came across a mid-year 911 last spring and, last time he reported in, was having some fun getting it up-and-running.

Sorry, I don't mean to bash the Miata... I guess I am just having a bit of buyers remorse.

The Boxster is a great choice of car for turn key fun. I drive one every day and don't regret it one bit. They are a blast and with the two trunks you can actually carry a lot of stuff in one (just no long guns if the wife unit is taking the only space AKA the passenger seat).
Now having said that, and being a huge Boxster fan I will tell you it will not scratch the 911 itch, but it is an apple/orange kind of thing

Let me know Mister and please put me on the list of buyers.

You can still find a nice mid-year or SC for $10-15k with some looking. Hell even a Carrera if you're lucky. A Boxster is a nice substitute, you get the flat six howl and handling that will put the older cars to shame. The 944 is a great car but they're also old and cheap, it's getting really hard to find nice ones and they seem to be commanding a premium. Sounds like a 911 is what you want, start shopping craigslist over the winter when prices are cheap, you never know....

When it comes to classic Porsches, it is like owning a horse or dog. They all need about the same care and TLC. Get the horse or dog you want, it will cost the same in terms of upkeep. The Boxster is not a good alternative either, because the bottom falls out on them. A $15k Boxster now will be a $7k car in 5-10 years. That's not going to happen with any air cooled 911.

I regret selling my SC, but it had to go to pay for the 993. The 993 is now the car I owned the longest in my life ...

A supercharged Miata is a pretty good car. I bought new tires for mine, changed the oil, kept driving it, and bought new tires... I expect brake pads will be next... What else is there, when a timing belt and full service takes maybe a half a day ?

It's not a Targa. But then neither is a 944.

The thing is, if you want to talk about the most raced car in the woorld, it would be the Miata. If you want fun and affordable, easy to mod and upgrade with a huge aftermarket support group, it would be the Miata. RWD, good handling, and they can be fast.

It is an option. Monetarily, very few cars will ever come close to being as cheap to own and operate. If someone wants to get off of the sidelines, and into the game for a minimal entry fee, I am just putting it out there.

I wrote mid-year OR SC. I was referring to the '74-'77 models that still tend to be reasonably priced.

If you spend $10k on a Boxster you're not going to lose much, if any, value. You can find nice cars in that price range, with the S being a little more. The best thing about the Boxster is their newer age, it's easier to find one that hasn't been neglected. Though I agree about the air cooled 911 not losing money, I suspect they are all going to continue appreciating.

Not sure what it would feel like going from a nice 2.2 911S to an old Corvair? Maybe like switching from young Cindy Crawford to one of the stumpier Kardashians? IDK...:(

The truth of the matter is that only a fast 911 is going to suffice, it won't be as cool as a 1970 911S but it might have other attributes that the old one was lacking. You hinted that you sold the old S for somewhere in the $30s? Do you still have that $$? You could buy a nice 993 for that, maybe have to add a couple bucks...I'd stay away from the 944s/Miatas/Mustangs/etc., you'll just have a sick feeling every time you look at it. In a clean 993, you could just pretend that you traded the old S in back in the late '90s when the 993 was worth 8x as much! :)
