Torque Wrench Question

Hey guys,

I just bought a Precision Instruments split beam torque wrench. It seems like a decent tool, but there is play between the body of the wrench and the ratchet head. Is this normal? I've never had a split beam before, and have nothing to compare it to.

Thanks :)

Some play is normal especially at the lower settings. Some of the chain tire shops have torque wrench testers there to help stave off lawsuits from inept tire guys. I am sure they would click it for you to see if you are close

Thanks Rick. The play is consistent, regardless of the setting. I am thinking it is normal, as there is a split beam running through the center of the tool. I'm out to the garage to see if the split beam moves around, causing the need for some play. I admit I have no idea how this type of torque wrench works.

Call the company.

I sent them an email, but figured you guys would be less likely to say "it's fine... Blah blah blah".

I buy only Precision Instruments. They are [one of] the best on the market.
A little bit of play where I have indicated is normal, and necessary for the split beams to function. If they were rigid, this would just be an expensive "breaker bar".

^^^Exactly what I was concerned with. Thanks for clearing it up for me :)
