No disrespect intended, Baz, but I watched part of a single episode of Mac and Wife on Netflix; The worst of the worst of '70's TV, and I watched it as a kid when it was new. "And wife" is such a whiny harpy that it's no wonder Rock Hudson went to play for the other team.
"Colombo" is almost as bad.
"Rockford Files" still more or less stands the test of time, if you can get past the thin plots.

.....and her character was written as a competent, intelligent, beautiful and independent woman. The contrast between her and "And Wife" is amazing, considering it was the exact same era.

Anyone played by Nathan Fillion.

Big fan of Firefly, and stumbled across Castle a couple months ago, and just about every regular on there is likeable.

Laneco 09-30-2013 06:55 AM

Though not everyone's cup of tea, Holly Hunter in Saving Grace is my favorite TV character. Her character, with all the flaws and its ultimate "grace" resonates with me.

Oh, and she did drive a Porsche!

That was a very emotional post.

Sell-outs? hardly. Not sure why you despise a company that creates jobs for 1.5 million people who have limited abilities or skills and who would otherwise be on the gubmint dole. Not sure how you or anyone could think that's a bad thing.

Maybe you tink dems peoples woo dint lern 2 rid nor write so gud shood makes da same monnies as dem colliage gradietes?

Here are some FACTS about the Robertsons.
wiki:

Quote:

When A&E decided to add bleeps to the show to add "spice", Robertson went to the network and told them to not make it seem like they use profanity, as they do not.
Also, while they did not cut prayers, they did cut out the part of Robertson's prayer where he said "in Jesus' name".
When A&E told them that they did not want to offend the Muslim population, Phil asked, "What year is it?" They replied "2012." He pointed out that the year was 2012 A.D., or in the year of Our Lord. He asked them why they would take someone out who the entire universe is based on.
He also asked A&E how many Muslims were watching Duck Dynasty.

A little more on Phil Robertson:
he grew up in Louisiana the 5th of seven children. They lived in poverty without electricity, a bathtub, or even a toilet.

They lived off the land with what they could grow or catch.
In his book Happy Happy Happy, he describes how they lived like it was 2 centuries ago but they were happy as could be without all that modern stuff spoiled people need.

In high school he was all-state in football, track and baseball and he got a scholarship to Louisiana Tech where he was the starting quarterback. He was the FIRST overall NFL pick in the 1970 draft.
The second string quarterback at LA tech was a guy named Terry Bradshaw.

Quote:

In an interview with ESPN, Robertson stated that:

"One time a bunch of geese came over and I was over there with the coach and talking about techniques or whatever, a big skull session on the practice field. I heard these geese. Remember we were practicing in the fall of the year — and the grand passage as we call it — the ducks and geese were coming from Canada. I heard these blues and snow geese coming over and I sort of fell into a trance. Of course I had my headgear next to my chest and I'm looking toward the sky and finally one of them coaches looked around, and he started cursing at me, "What are you doing son? Get over here! What are you looking up at?" I said, "A bunch of them geese, Coach. Boy they pretty, ain't they?" He said, "Get your butt over here."[3]

And this was most certainly not a secret; even Bradshaw claimed that:

"The quarterback playing ahead of me, Phil Robertson, loved hunting more than he loved football. He'd come to practice directly from the woods, squirrel tails hanging out of his pockets, duck feathers on his clothes. Clearly he was a fine shot, so no one complained too much."[9]

When Paul Harvey confronted Robertson with a recruitment to play professionally for the Washington Redskins, he declined because football conflicted with his hunting. Besides, football was only about holding up his scholarship to him, while Bradshaw practically lived and breathed the sport.[7] Robertson put it in this way: "Terry went for the bucks, and I chased after the ducks."
He played football at a world class level, but did it to get the scholarship so he could get a degree. Not for fame, not for wealth, for a degree and he gave all that wealth and fame up because it conflicted with what he loved and who he was.

Sounds to me like the opposite of a sell-out.

He fell on hard times in his early 20's with drinking and sinning, but became born again and cleaned up his act and has been a good father and husband ever since.
He started a small business making duck calls and did it better than anyone else had done, and it grew into a multi-million dollar company.

He is real when he portays family values and morals, something there is simply not enough of out there anymore.

emcon5 09-30-2013 11:22 AM

The more I think about this, I think this is why I generally can't stomach "Reality" TV shows.

Damn near nobody on any of them is actually likeable.

berettafan 09-30-2013 11:27 AM

Phil Robertson has been around selling cheap calls and hunting videos for a lot longer than you might think. Years ago I watched one of his hunting videos and recall comments that would have most women screaming for his head on a platter. Stuff like 'we keep our women for picking ducks, that's what they are supposed to do' was part of his act.

I'm glad you bought the package the tv producers sold you but that's all it is in my opinion.

Claiming some sort of moral high ground over Bradshaw is downright comical. The guy is a marketing expert, that's it. His hunting videos are taj mahal cake hunts in very carefully set up situations that the average man doesn't even dare to dream about.

scottmandue 09-30-2013 11:32 AM

I was riveted by Soprano's... but I'm not sure Tony and Walter are what I call "endearing"

The characters from Dick Van Dyke and Mayberry were the first that came to my mind but those have been covered.

How about Rhoda?

Or Bob Newhart?

All true but the NFL draft statement.
Bradshaw was the #1 pick in 1970.

Oberst: FWIW I posted the pic more for "Mac" than "the wife" but alas she goes with "Mac" on the show so there it is....

I wasn't a huge fan of the show necessarily but he was really great in his role anyway --- and so the post.

I can't think of a single role I like John Ritter in, even on shows I liked. Something about his acting always rubbed me the wrong way.

The fictional Matt LeBlanc may be my favorite character on a show right now:

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/...ticleLarge.jpg

A hilarious take on celebrity, UK/US cultural differences, and network tv culture, and in the middle is LeBlanc's self-destructive, impulsive, character who, when the chips are down, is a decent guy.

Lorene Greene went on to star in Battlestar Galactica (the original series) as Adama, which some scifi nuts like me see as an endearing TV character.

Pernell Roberts went on to star in Trapper John M.D. (the continuation of the character from M.A.S.H) which aired from 1979 till 1986, providing another notable endearing TV character.

Dan Blocker "Hoss" was the only Cartwright that did not have another endearing TV character after Bonanza because he died in 1972, one year before the end of filming of Bonanza.:(
