Antique Radio
my co-worker gave me this old console radio the other day. Philco model 38-7 from 1938 I think. I think its pretty cool. I do not have a variac so we just plugged her in and let her have it. It actually works... for the most part. it only gets really strong stations and the pots are dirty but i cranked it up and it actually sounds pretty good. It is full of those wax paper capacitors that look like they have been leaking and its dirty... should be a neat project.
He said it belonged to his parents. I like to imagine the stories told through this thing. FDRs fireside chats. old episodes the The Shadow. kinda neat to think about.

Nice.
Does it have the turn table inside? I've got a 1936 Philco that looks pretty similar but a little more ornate. ![]()

Get a raspberry pi and set it up as a media player and get a ton of Freely available vintage content from archive.org - Internet Archive Search: old time radio show Mount the pi somewhere non-obvious, use one of the phone apps as a remote control.

no turntable on this one. Yours looks pretty sweet man! very nice. Some of them had phono inputs. I wonder if I could add an input to this one for the pi / mp3's whatever. Doing a quick google search I see some people have put modern parts inside but this old unit has an audio quality that I kinda like.

First thing first...
Don't turn it on again! Don't turn it on again! There are a few things that need doing first. Otherwise you could smoke the power transformer. First thing first, how much do you know about electronics? Can you solder? Check out this forum: Antique Radios - The Collector's Resource Read these articles: Phil's Old Radios - Beginner's Corner I restore and collect antique radios, and I would be happy to help you get your feet under you with this. That's a pretty nice set from back in the day. Philco only used that style of pre-set tuning for one year and on 3 models IIRC. Six tubes, it shouldn't be too hard to work on this one. Especially since it is currently in working shape. And yes, it is pretty easy to add a 3.5mm switching jack to it so you can plug your iPod etc into it. I do it all the time for the ones I am giving to friends and family.

Very cool. In my totally unprofessional opinion, don't try to "restore" it.
