Chicago advise
My wife and I are going back to New York at the end of September to visit our son. I have always wanted to go to Chicago and hit some blues clubs. We figure to go for a couple of days and then on to New York. We need some recommendations on where to go and where to stay. Thanks in advance.

How authentic do you want the clubs? :-)
Not Blues per se, but I highly recommend the Green Mill. Old School but safer area. Any hotel in downtown is safe. Pick your cost. Michigan Ave is the center of downtown on the weekends. The loop is all business and will be empty.

For a first time in visitor, as mentioned above - Kingston Mines
Guaranteed decent entertainment at Buddy Guy's Legend's (Wabash and Balbo Ave.). Check the schedule before heading out but Nicks Beer Garden on (Wicker Park on Milwaukee ave.) Good eats and a mix of live jazz or blues at Shaws Crab house. Mayne Stage - larger act stuff not always blues but again, check the schedule. Personally, I like the many small fun places like Blue Chicago on Clark St. or B.L.U.E.S. on Halsted (packs the house) jam on'

As stated above all good recommendations, but definitely check out the schedule at SPACE in Evanston(borders Chicago on the N/E) they should have something you'll like. Easily the best sounding room in the area, also the most expensive to drink at.
Honky Tonk BBQ has live music it's south in the Pilsen neighborhood. Check the schedule they may have something you'd like.

Wow, looks like two nights might not be long enough. Thanks for all the recommendations. I will be sure to report in after our trip.

My best advise is don't rent a car, stay on Michigan avenue or nearby. There is allot to see if you stay in the area. Most hotels have shuttles back to the airport, enjoy your stay!

I think this is what we will do . We will take a cab to any clubs that are out of walking distance.

+1 on Kingston Mines
Download the Uber App for your smartphone before you come. It allows you to hail a taxi from your smartphone and auto pay with a credit card when done. Most convenient way to get a cab in the city, especially if you end up a little off the beaten path. |

10 years ago you could have hit the Checkerboard Lounge, but its replacement is lacking. Kingston Mines is a safe bet and Chris' suggestion of the Green Mill is a *great* one, but its mainly jazz not blues (go anyway!).

We love Chicago! So much to see and just beautiful. Kingston mines was awesome and Joanna Conner just blew me away. My favorite is Blues Chicago, very small and authentic. Thanks guys for all the recommendations.

These two were my favs in the 80s when I used to make the annual trek to Chicago for Summer CES. Good times.
