But, I think it has been pretty well confirmed that the beetle idea was "borrowed".
Both the streamlined design and the technical specifications, especially the air-cooled flat-four engine mounted in the back, give the T97 a striking resemblance to the KdF-Wagen of Volkswagen, which later became the Beetle. It is believed that Porsche used Tatra's designs since he was under huge pressure to design the Volkswagen quickly and cheaply.[2] According to the books Tatra - The Legacy of Hans Ledwinka and Car Wars, Adolf Hitler said of the Tatra 'this is the car for my roads'.[2][3] Ferdinand Porsche later admitted 'to have looked over Ledwinka's shoulders' while designing the Volkswagen.[2][4] Tatra sued Porsche for damages, and Porsche was willing to settle. However, Hitler canceled this, saying he 'would settle the matter.' [5] When Czechoslovakia was invaded by the Nazis, the production of the T97 was immediately halted, and the lawsuit dropped. After the war, Tatra reopened the lawsuit against Volkswagen. In 1967, the matter was settled when Volkswagen paid Tatra 3,000,000 Deutsche Mark in compensation.[ Tatra 97 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

IIRC, in his book We at Porsche: the autobiography of Dr. Ing. h.c. Ferry Porsche - Ferry Porsche, John Bentley - Google Books Ferry dismissed the claim, but there are quite a lot of similarities.
That website starts hinting at some extremist views though. I wouldn't be surprised if he started demanding the Porsche factory be moved back to Tel Aviv lol. On the subject of 'stealing' or 'borrowing' a design: I'm pretty sure that before the Tatra car there were torsion bars, 4-cyl engines, rear engines, pancake engines, rounded monochassis, rounded fender flairs, removable fenders, removable wheels, steering wheels, opening doors, door handles, etc. Manufactures openly copy other designs today, just as much as they did back in the 1920s. It's interesting to think about what defines "influencing" vs. "stealing". |

Old news.....
Ford was told he had to get a license to produce the automobile, the idea was patented. He went to the Supreme court and won. The idea was owned by a guy that made wagons.....

It's not uncommon...
Tatra - VW MGB was copied from the Renault Floride Karmann Ghia was copied (shamlessly) from a Plymouth concept car. Etc., etc. |

One thing I dont understand:
If the nazis invaded Czechoslovakia, stole the plans, and copied verbatim... Why was the multi-million dollar lawsuit started before the war, and continued afterwards? ('Multi-million' meant something back in those days) |

I did get a chance to inspect a Tatra.
I was at a private VW collection viewing and this was tucked away in the back of a workshop. I didn't know what it was but it looked very Beetle-esq. Then saw the Tatra badging. It was all there. Rear engine, air cooled, torsion bar, approximate Beetle shape. The Tatra was a larger car, and if I recall correctly had a flat 8. The Beetle basic layout was copied, straight up.
