Yup, it's confirmed - as I posted some time back, Colt is well and truly back. Just received another brand new manufacture Peacemaker, this one in 7 1/2". The quality is every bit that of pre-war Colts, as was the last 5 1/2" I nabbed. A big step up from earlier third generation guns, for sure.

Just look at the color case hardening and bluing on this thing. I believe Colt is farming it out to Doug Turnbull these days. Whatever they are doing (or whoever is doing it), they are getting the best colors I have ever seen. Here is the new 7 1/2":

Here is an early third generation 4 3/4" that I've been carrying for about the last 30 years. Note how much more subdued the colors are. I spent a good deal of time tuning the action and polishing action parts when I first got this one. It's a fine gun, and very accurate, but the new ones need nothing. The actions on the new ones are butter smooth, and the triggers are light and crisp. As good as any Colts I've ever used.

To say I'm tickled with the new Colts would be a huge understatement. We've always looked for second generation guns, just because they were of better quality than third. We were paying a premium for them, though, and it was always a crap shoot whether it was a shooter or not. Well, now, it seems we are living in the best of times. Quality Colts of brand new manufacture, and for a fraction of what has become the cost of good second generation guns.

Jeff, I get what you're saying. But if I owned one of these, there's no way I'd carry them everyday. That's what Glocks are for. :D

I can appreciate a single action... used to have a Ruger Single 6 w/ both cylinders, and I'd happily trade my Contender in 44 mag for a Blackhawk in 357 or 44...

But I really like my 1911 :)

I had a brace o SSA's for a long time but never carried them...too bulky for me. Mine were BP frame, long flutes on the cyl, and acid etched bbl. sold them too cheap about a year ago :(

I own several 1911's in different sizes from different manufacturers and carry them regularly as well. I love 'em. But, when all is said and done, I feel so much more comfortable with a single action. It's what I grew up with, and I have tens upon tens of thousands of rounds through them. It's like they are an extension of me at this point; I have more confidence in my ability to quickly present and use one effectively than I have in any other handgun. They never jam, and the only thing to do is to cock the hammer - a perfectly natural motion when presenting the gun. Certainly not for everyone, but they suit me.

The Colt is a pretty small gun by today's standards. The 4 3/4" is very easy to carry concealed, even in the summer. I've always used the "border carry" - simply stuffed in my pants, behind my right hip, no holster - just a good stiff belt to hold up my pants. Even with shorts and a tee shirt they are undetectable.

I have to think, too, that the sound of a Colt cocking is much like racking a slide on a pump gun. Even folks who have never heard it will probably guess what it means. If they don't figure it out right away, I would imagine staring down an honest .454" diameter bore, and seeing the noses of four other bullets in the front of the cylinder would serve notice.

Yup. For most of my "adult" life - better than 30 years. Pretty well established way to carry these (and 1911's for that matter). Some guys recommend flipping out the loading gate to keep them from just falling through, but I've never seen the need.

Yes, I actually carry one of these as my CCW of choice. Familiarity is the key. That, and "only" five rounds of .45 Colt - 250 to 280 grain bullets at about 900 fps - will solve a lot of problems. And again, merely presenting and cocking one would likely have most adversaries pissing their pants.

The Dirty Harry/modern cowboy image this conjures up in my head would have me pissing my pants fnor certain. Not that I want to be in the business end of any gun.

Thanks, Greg - me too. I still have not tried shooting these things post accident. Maybe another month; I still have some soft tissue damage healing up in my right hand. I've put a couple thousand rounds through the air guns in the last month or so, but anything with recoil is off limits for now. I can't wait to shoot the new one.

That reminds me of another big improvement over older Colts - the new ones actually shoot to the sights with standard loads. They all used to shoot low and left right out of the box, on purpose. This allowed the shooter to file the front sight down for elevation and to screw the barrel in a bit more, or bend the front sight to the left for windage. I had to do that on every new Colt I ever bought, and some of the older ones that the previous owners didn't bother with. My 5 1/2" was right on at 50 yards with any of my 250-270 grain cast bullets at about 900 fps. Didn't have to touch a thing. I hope the new 7 1/2" works out the same.

That is one fine looking Colt. Guessing todays higher quality is due to better production technique and technology?

Not near as pretty but a reliable SW mod 29 in 2 1/2" w/ combat grips speaks of respect as a CCW. Big ole' flash out of them...lol

You do probably know that the case hardening colors fade over time, unless you do not use the gun, right?

If it can be summarized, can someone tell the story of how Colt fell and is now apparently being revived? What made them get so bad?

Nice, Those things have a funny little trigger but they shoot really well.

high time for me to get a nice wheel gun.
