Any exhaust experts?
I've started working on my new winter beater, and I took the aftermarket exhaust off to gain access to rust repair areas. Upon removing it, I noticed it had a broken bracket that will need to be welded on. No biggie.... till I looked in the end of the muffler.
![]() Isn't a muffler supposed to have some kind of baffling to "muffle" the sound? This is a 3" (I think) catback exhaust. But I can see right into the pipe. If there is no baffling, isn't this just a big stainless steel garbage can welded to some 3" tubing? ![]() It does not appear modified, except for the hole from broken hanger. This was like a 7-800$ exhaust when it was new.

No, there are several types of exhaust that do not use internal baffles. And they are usually shaped like the muffler that you have there. Glass packs, the old chambered exhaust from the late 60s early 70s Chevy hot rods, and even some normal looking mufflers.
The mufflers are designed, I believe like the mufflers some motor cycles or the silencers on guns. ![]() ![]() ![]()
