Is There a Ferrari That's Affordable?
For the common man?
. . ...thinking, all of a sudden. What Ferrari, year and model, won't break the bank* and will appreciate? Thanks for any info...good or bad. . *Have to define "bank", I guess.

308s seem reasonable, though i bet maintenance would destroy you on any older Ferrari.

Unless you're buying an Enzo, or a 60s model, Ferraris should never be considered an investment.

My understanding is that the mondial/308 can actually be fairly economically maintained if you are a dyi guy without a lot of fear. I have wanted one forever, and do a little reading on the subject and for example, that $9900 major service is only about 2000 done yourself.

I think if I drove one I might fall in love... but there are probably dozens of cars I could say that about.

The day I took delivery of my first Ferrari in 1969, a 61 250 GT convertible, was I thought, the happiest day of my life. Wrong! It was about 18 months later, the day I sold it. I put a lot into it and sold it for what I paid for it, but the paranoia was over. I was not making much money then as it was my first year out of college and my folks were not wealthy. I learned a lot from the DIY effort required of an impoverished substitute teacher. Porsches have always been the sportscar that owners pack on miles with little fear of problems. One of the biggest problems with Porsches are with those that don't get driven! That said, 308s, like the guy said can be bought for around 20k and are DIY friendly and parts not too ridiculous compared to Porsche.

. They had a demo Mondial in some ugly light blue...drove it and they wanted to just "give" it to me, but just couldn't get enrolled after driving and lusting after the Dino. Common sense told me to attend to my business and look later. Some common sense, eh? . Dinos are now going for what?...$300k+? Who knew?

General consensus is that the 348's are on the upswing. You can pick a well sorted one up for the low 30's. Anyway you shape it...it's not going to get any cheaper. 10 years from now, it will be worth more.
I said a couple of years ago that the 308/GT4 models would be going up in value. Long considered the poor-man's 308, and not desirable because of looks..they are shooting up in value. In the Ferrari world...the 348/355 is the 993 of Ferraris. 360's are the 996's. The 360's are considered to have bland styling, higher production numbers, etc. While it's arguably a better car then the 348 or 355, it lacks the soul that the earlier cars have. Internet forums have done a good job of tarnishing the reputation of the 355 with regards to manifolds cracking and valve guides going bad. You'll see that the 360 (and 430) also suffer from these same issues. On another note...from an investment point of view...keep your eyes on Lamborghini Jarama's. V12 Lambo from the Miura era. now that Miuras are unobtanium, you'll see the Jaramas go up up up in value.

oh...the 308 is largely DIY friendly. the 348 a little tougher. All said and done...the Ferrari's that are babied are the ones that have the most issues. They need to be driven hard, and then maintained. simple.

Models that no one really wants? Affordable. Wheeler Dealers did one awhile back. If they did one then that's your affordable Ferrari.
